I started my scientific career in 1993 at the Department of Microbiology and Genetics (University of Salamanca), where I did my Ph.D. studying the molecular mechanisms regulating the yeast-to-hypha transitions in dimorphic fungi, such as Candida albicans. During this time, I published three research articles indexed in the JCR. After a short post-doctoral stay at the University of Leon (Spain), where I published one paper indexed in the JCR, in 2001 I was offered a position as a postdoctoral scientist at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (currently Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, United Kingdom) belonging to the prestigious CRUK Foundation. I remained at the Paterson Institute for more than eleven years at Dr. Georges Lacaud´s group, studying the epigenetic factors, mainly histone acetylation, that direct hematopoietic stem cell fate and its implication in the development of acute myeloid leukaemia. As a result of this work I published seven papers indexed in the JCR, (three of them in first quartil journals_Q1-25%), and two book chapters. During my postdoctoral period, I was directly implicated in the design of the projects, as well as in their experimental development. This fact is reflected in the authorship of four of the seven publications, where I was corresponding author as well as first author. I also opened a new line of research in Dr. Lacaud´s group studying the role of a histone acetyltransferase (MOZ) in the regulation of neural stem cells fate. I came back to Spain in July 2012 and joined Dr. J. Leon-Serrano´s lab at the University of Cantabria for a short period of time to develop a research project related to my area of expertise (stem cells and epigenetics). In April 2013 I joined Dr J.A. Riancho´s group (Department of Internal Medicine, University of Cantabria-IDIVAL) where I developed a project based on the study of the epigenetic mechanisms (mainly DNA-methylation) altered in human mesenchymal stem cells from osteoporotic individuals. As a result of this period (2013-2015) I published nine indexed research articles (eight of them as first author and one of them as corresponding author), two non-indexed research articles and one book chapter. Of the indexed articles produced during this period, two were published in first quartile journals. In 2015 I joined the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of Cantabria and Dr. J.C.Rodriguez-Rey´s research group where I have been working in studying the epigenetic regulation of the osteogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells in order to design new strategies to increase their potential for bone regeneration. Since I joined this laboratory, I have published two indexed research papers, one of them, as a corresponding author (in the first quarter). One more research article is now under review and two more in preparation. Altogether, from the 26 scientific works published during my career, 3 have been book chapters and 21 have been research papers published in journals indexed in the Journal Citations Report. Out of those 21 indexed publications, 10 are in the first quartile, and of those, 5 publications are classified in the first decile (High Impact Factor Journals). In addition, I have been acting as a referee of high quality publications such as Stem cells (IF 5.6), Scientific Reports (IF 4.12) or Clinical Epigenetis (IF 6.1) in several occasions. Throughout the years, I have also established collaborations with scientific groups in different universities in the USA, UK and China and in other parts of Spain, that have produced relevant scientific papers.
