The borders of the mediastineal compartments anterior mediastinum are formed by the sternum anteriorly, the anterior edge of the pericardium posteriorly, the middle mediastinum by the pericardium anteriorly, the line passing 1 cm posterior to the anterior border of the thoracic vertebrae posteriorly, and the posterior mediastinum by the vertebral corpuscles behind this line and the posterior transverse processes.
