Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fatigue is a significant contributor to the burden experienced by patients with chronic disorders. The development of standardized treatments is challenging due to the lack of consensus concerning the etiology of fatigue. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an overview of non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue. The efficacy and differences in fatigue treatment across conditions will be explored. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted using the databases PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo and CINAHL. Trials were eligible when (1) adult patients (≥ 18 years old) with disorders causing fatigue were included, (2) non-pharmacological interventions performed, (3) treatment was compared to standard care, placebo or active control group, (4) fatigue was the only primary outcome assessed with a multidimensional tool, and (5) a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design was applied. RESULTS 7592 papers were screened. 91 RCTs were eligible, with data reported in 95 papers. Specific fatigue interventions were present for a broad range of conditions. Findings demonstrated promising evidence for physical activity, CBT, online programs and multidimensional modules. Additional types of interventions were effective, but evidence was limited due to risk of bias and small sample sizes. Due to high heterogeneity concerning methodology, a meta-analysis was not possible. CONCLUSION Several non-pharmacological treatment options for fatigue are promising. No clear evidence was found that fatigue should be treated differently depending on the underlying condition. However, further research is necessary with a focus on a transdiagnostic approach to fatigue, high study quality and long-term follow-ups.

Abstract
PURPOSE To update the ASCO guideline on the management of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in adult survivors of cancer. METHODS A multidisciplinary panel of medical oncology, geriatric oncology, internal medicine, psychology, psychiatry, exercise oncology, integrative medicine, behavioral oncology, nursing, and advocacy experts was convened. Guideline development involved a systematic literature review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in 2013-2023. RESULTS The evidence base consisted of 113 RCTs. Exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based programs led to improvements in CRF both during and after the completion of cancer treatment. Tai chi, qigong, and American ginseng showed benefits during treatment, whereas yoga, acupressure, and moxibustion helped to manage CRF after completion of treatment. Use of other dietary supplements did not improve CRF during or after cancer treatment. In patients at the end of life, CBT and corticosteroids showed benefits. Certainty and quality of evidence were low to moderate for CRF management interventions. RECOMMENDATIONS Clinicians should recommend exercise, CBT, mindfulness-based programs, and tai chi or qigong to reduce the severity of fatigue during cancer treatment. Psychoeducation and American ginseng may be recommended in adults undergoing cancer treatment. For survivors after completion of treatment, clinicians should recommend exercise, CBT, and mindfulness-based programs; in particular, CBT and mindfulness-based programs have shown efficacy for managing moderate to severe fatigue after treatment. Yoga, acupressure, and moxibustion may also be recommended. Patients at the end of life may be offered CBT and corticosteroids. Clinicians should not recommend L-carnitine, antidepressants, wakefulness agents, or routinely recommend psychostimulants to manage symptoms of CRF. Abstract
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) affects therapeutic compliance and clinical outcomes including recurrence and mortality. This study aimed to comprehensively and comparatively assess the severity-based prevalence of CRF. From two public databases (PubMed and Cochrane Library), we extracted data containing information on both prevalence and severity of fatigue in cancer patients through December 2021. We conducted a meta-analysis to produce point estimates using random effects models. Subgroup analyses were used to assess the prevalence and severity by the organ/system tumor development, treatment phase, therapeutic type, sex and assessment method. A total of 151 data (57 studies, 34,310 participants, 11,805 males and 22,505 females) were selected, which indicated 43.0% (95% CI 39.2-47.2) of fatigue prevalence. The total CRF prevalence including 'mild' level of fatigue was 70.7% (95% CI 60.6-83.3 from 37 data). The prevalence of 'severe' fatigue significantly varied by organ/system types of cancer origin (highest in brain tumors 39.7% vs. lowest in gynecologic tumors 3.9%) and treatment phase likely 15.9% (95% CI 8.1-31.3) before treatment, 33.8% (95% CI 27.7-41.2) ongoing treatment, and 24.1% (95% CI 18.6-31.2) after treatment. Chemotherapy (33.1%) induced approximately 1.5-fold higher prevalence for 'severe' CRF than surgery (22.0%) and radiotherapy (24.2%). The self-reported data for 'severe' CRF was 20-fold higher than those assessed by physicians (23.6% vs. 1.6%). Female patients exhibited a 1.4-fold higher prevalence of 'severe' fatigue compared to males. The present data showed quantitative feature of the prevalence and severity of CRF based on the cancer- or treatment-related factors, sex, and perspective of patient versus physician. In the context of the medical impact of CRF, our results provide a comparative reference to oncologists or health care providers making patient-specific decision.

Abstract
Integrativety oncology (IO) is a "patient-centered, evidence-informed field of comprehensive cancer care that utilizes mind-body practices, natural products, and lifestyle modifications from different traditions alongside conventional cancer treatments." There is an urgent need to educate oncology health care providers on the fundamentals of evidence-based IO to meet the needs of people with cancer. In this chapter, we aim to provide oncology professionals with actionable guidance on the basis of the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO)-American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guidelines on integrative medicine use during oncology visits to help alleviate symptoms and side effects in people with cancer during and after treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE This manuscript aims to compare and contrast acceptability and perceived benefits of yoga-skills training (YST) and an empathic listening attention control (AC) in the Pro-You study, a randomized pilot trial of YST vs. AC for adults receiving chemotherapy infusions for gastrointestinal cancer. METHODS Participants were invited for a one-on-one interview at week 14 follow-up, after completing all intervention procedures and quantitative assessments. Staff used a semi-structured guide to elicit participants' views on study processes, the intervention they received, and its effects. Qualitative data analysis followed an inductive/deductive approach, inductively identifying themes and deductively guided by social cognitive theory. RESULTS Some barriers (e.g., competing demands, symptoms), facilitators (e.g., interventionist support, the convenience of clinic-based delivery), and benefits (e.g., decreased distress and rumination) were common across groups. YST participants uniquely described the importance of privacy, social support, and self-efficacy for increasing engagement in yoga. Benefits specific to YST included positive emotions and greater improvement in fatigue and other physical symptoms. Both groups described some self-regulatory processes, but through different mechanisms: self-monitoring in AC and the mind-body connection in YST. CONCLUSIONS This qualitative analysis demonstrates that participant experiences in a yoga-based intervention or an AC condition reflect social cognitive and mind-body frameworks of self-regulation. Findings can be used to develop yoga interventions that maximize acceptability and effectiveness and to design future research that elucidates the mechanisms by which yoga is efficacious.

Abstract
Fatigue is a common symptom experienced by 80% of individuals who receive chemotherapy and is one of the major factors that affect quality of life (QoL) of patients with breast cancer. Our study aimed to assess the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy integrated with activity pacing (CBT-AP) on cancer-related fatigue among patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. A parallel-group, randomised controlled trial was conducted. Severely fatigued patients were randomly assigned to the CBT-AP or usual care (UC) groups using a computer-generated random sequence. The new intervention was designed for seven sessions: three 2-hour face-to-face and four 30-minute telephone sessions. The primary outcome (fatigue severity) and the secondary outcomes (depression and QoL) were assessed at the end of the intervention and after 3 months. The data were analysed by repeated measures analyses of covariance (RM-ANCOVA). CBT-AP had a significant time effect (P < .001, ηp2 = 0.233) in reducing fatigue from baseline (adjusted mean = 7.48) to the end of the intervention (adjusted mean = 6.37) and the 3-month follow-up (adjusted mean = 6.54). Compared to the UC group, the CBT-AP group had lower fatigue and depression scores, and higher global health status scores. The group × time interaction revealed a significant reduction in fatigue and depression in the CBT-AP group compared to the UC group. Therefore, CBT-AP appears to be effective in reducing fatigue and depression and improving QoL in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. It is highly recommended to integrate a CBT-AP intervention in routine cancer care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common and persistent issues experienced by cancer patients. Cancer-related fatigue is a distinct form of fatigue that is subjective, long-lasting and unalleviated by rest or sleep. Studies have shown that almost all cancer patients experience severe fatigue that disrupts the quality of life and physical function, but cancer-related fatigue remains under-addressed in clinical care, and only about half of all patients receive treatment. METHODS To increase the awareness of cancer-related fatigue and improve current management, the Taiwan Society of Cancer Palliative Medicine and the Taiwan Oncology Nursing Society convened a consensus committee to develop recommendations for the screening, assessment and treatment of cancer-related fatigue. RESULTS Thirteen consensus recommendations were subsequently developed based on the best available evidence and the clinical experience of committee members. CONCLUSIONS These recommendations are expected to facilitate the standardization of cancer-related fatigue management across Taiwan and may also serve as a reference for other clinicians.

Fatigue trajectories during pediatric ALL therapy are associated with fatigue after treatment: a national longitudinal cohort study. Support Care Cancer 2023; 31:1. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fatigue is one of the most prevalent and distressing symptoms reported by survivors of childhood cancer. There is currently a lack of longitudinal studies on cancer-related fatigue, and especially on the relationship between the course of fatigue during treatment and fatigue at follow-up. The purpose of the current study was therefore to investigate if the course of fatigue during treatment, treatment intensity, serious adverse events, sex, or age at diagnosis are associated with cancer-related fatigue after treatment. METHODS Participants were 92 children and adolescents diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (mean age at diagnosis was 6.26 years). Fatigue was measured with PedsQL multidimensional fatigue scale proxy reports 5 months after diagnosis, 12 months after diagnosis, 24 months after diagnosis, and at follow-up 12 months after end of treatment. The effect of patient and treatment characteristics on fatigue reported at follow-up was tested through logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The course of fatigue during treatment significantly predicted fatigue reported at follow-up for general fatigue (p = .038, OR = 9.20), sleep/rest fatigue (p = .011, OR = 15.48), and cognitive fatigue (p < .001, OR = 10.78). None of the other variables were associated with fatigue at follow-up for any of the subscales. CONCLUSIONS The findings demonstrate that fatigue reported during treatment can predict fatigue at follow-up. These results stress the need for longitudinal assessments. Healthcare professionals need to be aware that pediatric patients who are fatigued during treatment need to receive additional attention and timely interventions since cancer-related fatigue will not resolve by itself in the first year after end of treatment.

Abstract
Previous research has shown promising results in using hypnosis to treat various symptoms and side effects of medical treatments. The objective was to identify studies that use hypnosis as an adjuvant to evidence-based treatments to evaluate its benefits in patients with cancer. The search identified 873 articles published between 2000 and February 2021, of which 22 were selected using the principles of the PRISMA. Apart from 1 study, all studies showed that interventions improved the measured variables compared to a control group. Most studies showed that hypnosis has positive effects on reducing anxiety, pain, nausea, fatigue, drug use, and length of hospital stays. Hypnosis also improves depressive symptoms, insomnia, hot flashes, well-being, and quality of life, and helps increase adherence to treatment. When used by qualified professionals as an adjuvant to well-established treatments, hypnosis improves symptoms caused by oncological interventions and the disease itself. In addition, hypnosis has no side effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review the evidence regarding rehabilitation interventions targeting optimal physical or cognitive function in adults with a history of cancer and describe the breadth of evidence as well as strengths and limitations across a range of functional domains. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Plus, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. The time scope was January 2008 to April 2019. STUDY SELECTION Prospective, controlled trials including single- and multiarm cohorts investigating rehabilitative interventions for cancer survivors at any point in the continuum of care were included, if studies included a primary functional outcome measure. Secondary data analyses and pilot/feasibility studies were excluded. Full-text review identified 362 studies for inclusion. DATA EXTRACTION Extraction was performed by coauthor teams and quality and bias assessed using the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Classification of Evidence Scheme (class I-IV). DATA SYNTHESIS Studies for which the functional primary endpoint achieved significance were categorized into 9 functional areas foundational to cancer rehabilitation: (1) quality of life (109 studies), (2) activities of daily living (61 studies), (3) fatigue (59 studies), (4) functional mobility (55 studies), (5) exercise behavior (37 studies), (6) cognition (20 studies), (7) communication (10 studies), (8) sexual function (6 studies), and (9) return to work (5 studies). Most studies were categorized as class III in quality/bias. Averaging results found within each of the functional domains, 71% of studies reported statistically significant results after cancer rehabilitation intervention(s) for at least 1 functional outcome. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide evidence supporting the efficacy of rehabilitative interventions for individuals with a cancer history. The findings should be balanced with the understanding that many studies had moderate risk of bias and/or limitations in study quality by AAN criteria. These results may provide a foundation for future work to establish clinical practice guidelines for rehabilitative interventions across cancer disease types.

Abstract
Background
Breast cancer is the most common cancer type among women worldwide with over a million new cases each year. More than 40% of these women will struggle with chronic pain and fatigue after surgery, regardless of surgical procedure. These consequences are detrimental and result in distress and disability, including work disability. Few attempts have been made to prevent chronic pain and fatigue after surgery by applying a psychological approach, despite psychological risk factors being crucial in the development of both chronic pain and fatigue. In this study, we aim to develop and test an easily implementable strategy of preventing chronic pain and fatigue after breast cancer surgery. The intervention strategy involves a pre-operative hypnosis session and a web-based post-operative Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The hypnosis has previously been found effective in alleviating acute post-operative pain and fatigue in breast cancer patients, while ACT is well suited to cancer populations as it offers a model of healthy adaptation to difficult circumstances. Together they form an intervention strategy with both a preventive and a rehabilitative focus.
Methods/Design
This randomized controlled trial aims to estimate the effects of the pre- and post- operative interventions compared to attentional control and treatment as usual (TAU) and will also include a qualitative process evaluation. Participants will be randomized to receive either a pre-operative brief hypnosis session and a post-operative web-based psychological intervention (iACT) or a pre-operative one-session mindfulness through an audio file and post-operative TAU. Self-reported questionnaire data and biomarker data will be assessed pre-surgery, post-surgery and 3 and 12 months after surgery. In addition, we will assess registry data on sick leave and prescriptions until 2-year follow-up. In the qualitative process evaluation, data will be collected from participants from both study arms (through interviews and a diary) and two different analyses performed (socio-narrative and Grounded Theory) with the objective to describe the development of chronic post-surgical pain and fatigue and the potential influence of the interventions on these processes. The study is set-up to demonstrate a minimum difference in pain of 1 point on NRS (0–10) and 3 points on FACIT-F (0–52) between the groups at 3-months follow-up by including 200 breast cancer patients in total.
Discussion
This trial will be the first study to estimate the effect of a combined pre-operative hypnosis with a post-operative iACT to prevent pain and fatigue after breast cancer surgery. The results from our study might i) help the large group of women affected by chronic pain and fatigue after breast cancer surgery, ii) shed light on the mechanisms involved in chronic pain and fatigue development, and iii) serve as a model for other surgical procedures.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail a specific age progression approach that we use in our clinical practice and clinical trials in interventions including hypnosis for chronic pain and fatigue in individuals with disabilities. Moreover, we present preliminary evidence regarding the effects of the hypnosis sessions that use age progression suggestions compared to hypnosis sessions that provide different suggestions, as well as to sessions that did not include hypnotic procedures. Findings indicate that age progression suggestions for pain management with individuals participating in hypnosis treatment resulted in substantial immediate reductions in pain intensity, which were greater than pain reductions associated with treatments sessions providing pain education or cognitive therapy. In addition, age progression sessions provided to individuals receiving online hypnosis treatment for fatigue resulted in immediate large reductions in fatigue severity. Although the design of these two studies does not allow to report specific or long-term effects of the age progression techniques, findings indicate that including age progression suggestions to hypnosis protocols for pain and fatigue management is effective for reducing the immediate level of both symptoms. The development and continued evaluation of hypnotic interventions that increase or restore hope in, and optimism, for the future has the potential for enhancing the psychosocial well-being and quality of life of individuals with pain and fatigue.

Abstract
Simple Summary Many individuals with cancer suffer from persistent exhaustion due to cancer therapy, known as cancer-related fatigue (CRF). Yoga, psychosocial, and mindfulness-based interventions are recommended to reduce CRF. However, it is not clear yet how interventions need to be designed to maximize their efficacy. This meta-analysis aimed to identify intervention characteristics associated with greater reductions in CRF. A total of 70 interventions with 6387 participants were included in the analysis. Our results found a positive effect of yoga, psychosocial, and mindfulness-based interventions, while all invention types revealed large differences in intervention effects. In psychosocial interventions, using a group setting and working on cognition was related to higher efficacy. Regarding yoga and mindfulness-based interventions, no specific intervention characteristics emerged as more favorable than others. Overall, this meta-analysis suggests opportunities to optimize psychosocial interventions for CRF, whereas the design of yoga and mindfulness-based interventions seems to allow for variation. Abstract Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a burdensome sequela of cancer treatments. Besides exercise, recommended therapies for CRF include yoga, psychosocial, and mindfulness-based interventions. However, interventions conducted vary widely, and not all show a significant effect. This meta-analysis aimed to explore intervention characteristics related to greater reductions in CRF. We included randomized controlled trials published before October 2021. Standardized mean differences were used to assess intervention efficacy for CRF and multimodel inference to explore intervention characteristics associated with higher efficacy. For the meta-analysis, we included 70 interventions (24 yoga interventions, 31 psychosocial interventions, and 15 mindfulness-based interventions) with 6387 participants. The results showed a significant effect of yoga, psychosocial, and mindfulness-based interventions on CRF but with high heterogeneity between studies. For yoga and mindfulness-based interventions, no particular intervention characteristic was identified to be advantageous for reducing CRF. Regarding psychosocial interventions, a group setting and work on cognition were related to higher intervention effects on CRF. The results of this meta-analysis suggest options to maximize the intervention effects of psychosocial interventions for CRF. The effects of yoga and mindfulness-based interventions for CRF appear to be independent of their design, although the limited number of studies points to the need for further research.

Abstract
Cancer can provoke fatigue, sleep disturbances, and emotional distress. Hypnosis interventions have shown positive short-term effects on these symptoms. However, less is known about their long-term effects. This study assessed the short- and long-term effects of a group intervention combining self-care and self-hypnosis on these symptoms in posttreatment cancer patients. Ninety-five female cancer survivors were randomized to either a hypnosis group intervention or wait-list control. Results showed significant decreases in fatigue, sleep difficulties and emotional distress after intervention for the hypnosis group intervention in comparison to the wait-list control. Most of these positive effects were maintained at 1-year follow-up. Most participants received the hypnosis group intervention approximately 10.65 months after diagnosis, and it is possible that delivering the intervention earlier after diagnosis could have achieved a more robust impact. Further studies are needed to replicate these results in comparison to an active control condition and investigate the best time postdiagnosis for initiating the intervention.

Abstract
Adjuvant radiotherapy is one of the major anticancer treatments in early breast cancer patients. Acute and late radio-induced effects may occur during or after breast cancer radiotherapy, and their medical management is a major issue for radiation oncologists. Here, the present review of literature embraces complementary non-pharmacological interventions, which could be combined to adjuvant radiotherapy in order to improve patients care.

Abstract
Background The positive impact that physical activity has on patients with cancer has been shown in several studies over recent years. However, supervised physical activity programs have several limitations, including costs and availability. Therefore, our study proposes a novel approach for the implementation of a patient-executed, activity tracker–guided exercise program to bridge this gap. Objective Our trial aims to investigate the impact that an activity tracker–guided, patient-executed exercise program for patients undergoing radiotherapy has on cancer-related fatigue, health-related quality of life, and preoperative health status. Methods Patients receiving postoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer (OnkoFit I trial) or neoadjuvant, definitive, or postoperative treatment for other types of solid tumors (OnkoFit II trial) will be randomized (1:1:1) into 3-arm studies. Target accrual is 201 patients in each trial (50 patients per year). After providing informed consent, patients will be randomized into a standard care arm (arm A) or 1 of 2 interventional arms (arms B and C). Patients in arms B and C will wear an activity tracker and record their daily step count in a diary. Patients in arm C will receive personalized weekly targets for their physical activity. No further instructions will be given to patients in arm B. The target daily step goals for patients in arm C will be adjusted weekly and will be increased by 10% of the average daily step count of the past week until they reach a maximum of 6000 steps per day. Patients in arm A will not be provided with an activity tracker. The primary end point of the OnkoFit I trial is cancer-related fatigue at 3 months after the completion of radiotherapy. This will be measured by the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue questionnaire. For the OnkoFit II trial, the primary end point is the overall quality of life, which will be assessed with the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General sum score at 6 months after treatment to allow for recovery after possible surgery. In parallel, blood samples from before, during, and after treatment will be collected in order to assess inflammatory markers. Results Recruitment for both trials started on August 1, 2020, and to date, 49 and 12 patients have been included in the OnkoFit I and OnkoFit II trials, respectively. Both trials were approved by the institutional review board prior to their initiation. Conclusions The OnkoFit trials test an innovative, personalized approach for the implementation of an activity tracker–guided training program for patients with cancer during radiotherapy. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this article was to explore the effectiveness of rational emotive and cognitive-behavioral therapy (REBT) in a clinical setting. METHODS This study included 349 patients of the Albert Ellis Institute who sought psychotherapy from 2007 to 2016. Analyses were conducted by using the intent-to-treat principle, and outcomes were measured after three sessions of therapy (to measure early response) and at the end of 20 sessions. Outcome Questionnaire-45 was used to measure patient functioning. RESULTS Patients reported significant improvements in their functioning after participating in REBT, with a medium effect size for early response after three sessions of psychotherapy and at the end of the 20 sessions. CONCLUSIONS The authors' findings documented that REBT can be effectively transported from a research setting to clinical practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE This paper reports the methodology for undertaking a randomized controlled trial to assess the combined effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and activity pacing on fatigue experienced by breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHOD Fifty-eight patients experiencing severe fatigue will be randomized to a CBT group or usual care group. The intervention will be given for 6 sessions by a trained oncology nurse. Primary and secondary outcome measures will be assessed at baseline, the sixth week of intervention and at the third month post intervention. The primary outcome measure is fatigue (Brief Fatigue Inventory) and secondary outcome measures include depression (Patient Health Questionnaire) and quality of life (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire). The protocol is designed using the SPIRIT guidelines which is one of the EQUATOR checklists. DISCUSSION This is the first RCT that will determine the efficacy of CBT by integrating with activity pacing to reduce fatigue among breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The intervention design is novel in addressing multiple precipitating and perpetuating factors of fatigue and integrated with activity pacing in CBT. CONCLUSION If the intervention is effective, this therapeutic approach can be incorporated into a routine health care for breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study have been registered in Pan-African Clinical Trial Registry (website) on August 24, 2020. The trial registration number is PACTR202008881026130.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND Fatigue is one of the most consistent and distressing symptoms reported by adolescent/young adult (AYA) oncology patients. Bright white light (BWL) is used to treat fatigue in adult oncology but has not been explored in AYA oncology patients. The purpose of the current study was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of BWL for AYA who were receiving cancer-directed therapy. PARTICIPANTS 51 AYA patients with newly diagnosed solid tumors, including lymphoma. METHODS Participants were randomized to dim red light (DRL, n = 25) or BWL (n = 26) from devices retrofitted with adherence monitors for 30 minutes upon awakening daily for 8 weeks. Side effects were assessed via modified Systematic Assessment for Treatment-Emergent Effects (SAFTEE). Participants completed the PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale. RESULTS Of patients approached, 73% consented and participated. Mean adherence was 57% of days on study with 30.68 average daily minutes of usage. BWL did not cause more extreme treatment-emergent effects over DRL. Patients in the BWL group demonstrated significant improvement on all fatigue outcomes by both self-report and parent proxy report, which was not observed in the DRL group. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of light therapy to reduce fatigue in AYA patients receiving cancer-directed therapy. These findings demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and provide preliminary evidence of the potential benefits of BWL, which warrants further study in a confirmatory efficacy trial.ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier Number: NCT02429063.

Abstract
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are the standard of care for the treatment of several cancers. While these immunotherapies have improved patient outcomes in many clinical settings, they bring accompanying risks of toxicity, specifically immune-related adverse events (irAEs). There is a need for clear, effective guidelines for the management of irAEs during ICI treatment, motivating the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) to convene an expert panel to develop a clinical practice guideline. The panel discussed the recognition and management of single and combination ICI irAEs and ultimately developed evidence- and consensus-based recommendations to assist medical professionals in clinical decision-making and to improve outcomes for patients.

Abstract
Emotional distress, communication, and dyadic coping difficulties are common among cancer patients and their partners. Hypnosis-based interventions can improve emotional distress in patients. We designed a group intervention combining self-hypnosis and self-care techniques. We hypothesized an effect of the intervention on emotional distress, conjugal communication, and dyadic coping, considered in patients and their partners. Our exploratory controlled study included 55 women with cancer and 55 partners. Participants completed questionnaires before and after the intervention, which was delivered to patients only. No significant effect of the intervention was revealed for patients or partners. Positive correlations between patients' and partners' communication and dyadic coping were revealed. However, to address couples' or partners' difficulties, interventions specifically designed for couples or partners must be tested.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the feasibility of Attention Restoration Theory (ART)-driven hypnotherapy to address cancer-related fatigue (CRF). Six participants with CRF completed the study. Participants completed measures of fatigue and pain pre- and posttreatment of 5 sessions of ART-driven hypnotherapy, each of which followed a treatment manual. Results indicate that participants experienced reductions in fatigue, fatigue bothersomeness, and pain following the intervention. Additionally, participants reported high levels of treatment satisfaction. This innovative intervention of ART-driven hypnotherapy appears to be feasible and warrants further study in a controlled trial with a larger sample.

Abstract
In 1995, Kirsch and colleagues published an influential meta-analysis (k = 20, N = 577) which found that CBT enhanced with hypnosis (CBTH) was superior to CBT alone by at least d = .53. However, a lack of full replication and the emergence of new empirical studies prompted this updated analysis. A total of 48 post- (N = 1,928) and 25 follow-up treatments (N = 1,165) were meta-analyzed. CBTH achieved small to medium but statistically significant advantages over CBT at posttreatment (dIGPP/d = .25 to .41), and specifically in the management of depressed mood and pain. At follow-up, there was a medium sized advantage for CBTH (dIGPP/d = .54 to .59), and specifically for the treatment of obesity. These results further support the adjunctive use of hypnosis as an enhancer of CBT's efficaciousness and endurance as a treatment.

Abstract
Objectif : Les études qui s’interrogent sur l’efficacité des interventions non médicamenteuses, dans la prise en charge de la fatigue associée au cancer, comprennent le plus souvent des sessions d’activités physiques adaptées ou des prises en charge psychologiques. Parmi elles se trouve l’hypnose, mais elle est principalement proposée en combinaison avec une autre thérapie, limitant une interprétation en termes d’efficacité. À travers cette revue de la littérature, nous voulons comprendre quelle est la place de l’hypnose pour la prise en charge de la fatigue associée au cancer.
Méthode : Nous avons recherché les articles scientifiques indexés dans les bases de données Cochrane, PsycINFO, Pubmed et Web of Science. Les principaux mots clés étaient « fatigue », « cancer » et « hypnosis ». La qualité méthodologique des études a été évaluée.
Résultats : Quatre-vingt-deux études ont été recensées. Après sélection, 11 études ont été retenues à la lecture. Les résultats sur l’efficacité de l’hypnose seule (non combinée à une autre thérapie) ont porté sur 6 études. Bien qu’il faille distinguer l’hypnose délivrée par autrui, de l’autohypnose par audioenregistrement, nos résultats indiquent que 4 études rapportent une efficacité significative de l’hypnose pour réduire la fatigue des patients soignés pour un cancer.
Conclusion : Au niveau international, trop peu d’études évaluent l’efficacité de l’hypnose en oncologie. Ainsi, sur un symptôme spécifique comme la fatigue, les études se font encore plus rares. De plus, il est difficile d’évaluer l’efficacité d’une méthode pour laquelle l’homogénéisation de la procédure est difficile à mettre en place. Cependant, au regard de cette étude, l’hypnose présente un réel intérêt et une efficacité dans la réduction des symptômes de fatigue.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. In Spain, about a quarter of a million cases were diagnosed in 2017, and 81% of the Spanish population has used, at least once, some kind of complementary therapy. Said therapies are increasingly being used by cancer patients. The purpose of the study is to analyse the effectiveness of complementary therapies among cancer patients. A systematic peer review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guide in four databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and WOS). The inclusion criteria were Randomised Clinical Trials, published between 2013 and 2018, with a value of 3 or more on the Jadad Scale. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42019127593). The study sample amounted to 1845 patients (64.55% women), the most common being breast cancer patients (794), followed by lung cancer patients (341). Fifteen complementary therapies were identified. We found two studies for each of the following: electroacupuncture, phytotherapy, hypnotherapy, guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation. From the remaining ones, we identified a study on each therapy. The findings reveal some effective complementary therapies: auriculotherapy and acupuncture, laser moxibustion, hypnosis, Ayurveda, electroacupuncture, progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery, yoga, phytotherapy, music therapy and traditional Chinese medicine. On the other hand, electroacupuncture, laser moxibustion and traditional Chinese medicine presented adverse effects, and kinesiology did not show effectiveness.

Abstract
There is growing literature to support the use of hypnosis as an evidence-based behavioral medicine intervention to manage a wide variety of symptoms and side effects associated with cancer and its treatment (e.g., pain, nausea, fatigue). However, formal training in hypnosis is often lacking among cancer care providers. The purpose of this study is to identify common paraverbal errors among hypnosis trainees in order to inform future training efforts. In a sample of 196 hypnosis trainees, paraverbal errors (i.e., tone, pacing, and phrasing) were tracked across hypnotic intervention components. Results revealed that trainees had most difficulty with hypnotic tone, particularly during the Induction, Deepening, and Alerting components. Individual trainee characteristics were unrelated to paraverbal errors.

Quality of life and fatigue before and after radiotherapy in breast cancer patients. Strahlenther Onkol 2020; 197:281-287. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common side effect of cancer treatment, particularly in breast cancer patients. Over the past decade, the multimodal management of breast cancer has undergone several changes, such as the establishment of postoperative hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) as a new standard protocol and the reduced use of chemotherapy. The aim of the current study was to investigate the impact of these changes on quality of life (QoL) and CRF. METHODS A total of 66 patients was assessed for QoL and CRF using the FACIT‑F questionnaire. Patients were asked to complete the paper-based questionnaire before (TP1) and at the end of radiotherapy (TP2) as well as at follow-up (TP3). Subgroups were compared based on fractionation and previous application of chemotherapy. RESULTS For the entire cohort, no significant changes in the severity of fatigue were seen. A mild decrease of physical wellbeing (PWB) from TP1 to TP2 was observed (22.2 vs. 20.7, p = 0.007). Fatigue at TP1 was more severe in patients receiving chemotherapy before RT (37.9 vs. 30.5, p = 0.041). Only patients without preceding chemotherapy showed a significant worsening of fatigue from TP1 to TP2 (37.9 vs 34.8, p = 0.005). The same is true for physical wellbeing (PWB), with a decrease from TP1 to TP2 in chemotherapy-naïve patients only (23.5 vs. 21.4, p = 0.002). Fractionation did not impact any of the investigated endpoints. CONCLUSION Patients undergoing postoperative RT for breast cancer constitute a heterogeneous patient population with varying risks of developing CRF influenced by previous treatments. Therefore, patient selection seems to be critical when interventional studies addressing CRF during radiotherapy are designed.

Abstract
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common symptom for which cancer patients often use integrative and integrative therapies; however, evidence supporting these therapies is limited. The aim of this review is to provide evidence-based recommendations for integrative interventions during and after cancer treatment for CRF. These recommendations are based on a systematic literature review from 1990 through 2019. Cognitive behavior therapy plus hypnosis and American ginseng can be considered during active treatment, and acupressure, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and qigong/tai chi easy can be considered during posttreatment. Coenzyme Q10 and L-carnitine are not recommended during active-treatment. All other integrative therapies for CRF had insufficient evidence to make a recommendation. While there is increasing evidence for integrative therapies for CRF, because of lack of rigorous trials and replication, no therapies could be definitively recommended. Further rigorously designed integrative therapy research is needed and should consider implementation and dissemination.

Abstract
The delivery of radiation therapy shares many of the challenges encountered in imaging procedures. As in imaging, such as MRI, organ motion must be reduced to a minimum, often for lengthy time periods, to effectively target the tumor during imaging-guided therapy while reducing radiation dose to nearby normal tissues. For patients, radiation therapy is frequently a stress- and anxiety-provoking medical procedure, evoking fear from negative perceptions about irradiation, confinement from immobilization devices, claustrophobia, unease with equipment, physical discomfort, and overall cancer fear. Such stress can be a profound challenge for cancer patients' emotional coping and tolerance to treatment, and particularly interferes with advanced radiation therapy procedures where active, complex and repetitive high-level cooperation is often required from the patient.In breast cancer, the most common cancer in women worldwide, radiation therapy is an indispensable component of treatment to improve tumor control and outcome in both breast-conserving therapy for early-stage disease and in advanced-stage patients. High technological complexity and high patient cooperation is required to mitigate the known cardiac toxicity and mortality from breast cancer radiation by reducing the unintended radiation dose to the heart from left breast or left chest wall irradiation. To address this, radiation treatment in daily deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH), to create greater distance between the treatment target and the heart, is increasingly practiced. While holding the promise to decrease cardiac toxicity, DIBH procedures often augment patients' baseline stress and anxiety reaction toward radiation treatment. Patients are often overwhelmed by the physical and mental demands of daily DIBH, including the nonintuitive timed and sustained coordination of abdominal thoracic muscles for prolonged breath holding.While technologies, such as DIBH, have advanced to millimeter-precision in treatment delivery and motion tracking, the "human factor" of patients' ability to cooperate and perform has been addressed much less. Both are needed to optimally deliver advanced radiation therapy with minimized normal tissue effects, while alleviating physical and cognitive distress during this challenging phase of breast cancer therapy.This article discusses physical training and psychotherapeutic integrative health approaches, applied to radiation oncology, to leverage and augment the gains enabled by advanced technology-based high-precision radiation treatment in breast cancer. Such combinations of advanced technologies with training and cognitive integrative health interventions hold the promise to provide simple feasible and low-cost means to improve patient experience, emotional outcomes and quality of life, while optimizing patient performance for advanced imaging-guided treatment procedures - paving the way to improve cardiac outcomes in breast cancer survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatigue is one of the most common and distressing side-effects of breast cancer radiotherapy. According to current guidelines, accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) may be considered as an alternative treatment option for women with early-stage low-risk breast cancer. One method for APBI is single-dose intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) applied directly to the tumor bed during breast conserving surgery (BCS). The COSMOPOLITAN trial therefore aims to analyze the intensity of fatigue following single-shot IORT with electrons (IOERT) compared to conventional hypofractionated whole breast irradiation (WBI) in low risk early breast cancer patients. METHODS This trial is conducted as a multicenter, prospective, randomized, two-arm phase II study comparing the intensity of fatigue in early-stage breast cancer (cT1cN0cM0, tumor size < 2,5 cm, ER pos. Her2neu neg., age > 50 years) treated either with WBI or APBI after BCS. Secondary outcomes investigated are tumor control, overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), acute and chronic toxicity, quality of life (QoL) and cosmesis. A total of 202 patients will be randomized into two arms: Patients in arm A will receive WBI (40.05 Gy, 15 fractions) after surgical resection, while patients in arm B will receive IOERT (21 Gy to the 90%-isodose) during BCS. Fatigue will be assessed 12 weeks post surgery with the help of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT) Fatigue Scale. DISCUSSION The present trial aims to evaluate treatment response to compare single-shot intraoperative electron APBI to conventional WBI following BCS in early-stage low risk breast cancer patients. Fatigue is selected as the primary, patient-reported endpoint due its major clinical relevance. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cancer has a lot of consequences such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, emotional distress, cognitive impairment and reduced physical activity. Some hypnosis-based psychological interventions showed positive effects on fatigue, sleep and emotional distress, but generally focused on breast cancer patients. Our study aimed at assessing the effects of a group intervention combining self-care and self-hypnosis on quality of life of cancer patients. METHODS Our longitudinal randomized-controlled trial assessed the benefits of the intervention first on fatigue and secondly on associated symptoms (sleep, emotional distress, cognitive impairment and reduced physical activity) of post-treatment cancer patients, and investigated predictors of the evolution of fatigue. All variables were measured with questionnaires and an actigraph (for sleep and physical activity). RESULTS Ninety five women with different cancers were included in our study. Group-by-time effects were showed for fatigue, sleep, emotional distress and cognitive functioning: symptoms have improved in the intervention group compared to wait-list control group. Three predictors of the evolution of fatigue were revealed: depression, anxiety and worry. CONCLUSIONS Our group intervention had benefits for post-treatment cancer patients' quality of life. Impacting emotional distress could be important in order to decrease fatigue. Further studies are needed to replicate our results. This intervention could be easily implemented to improve quality of life of cancer patients. Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03144154). Retrospectively registered on the 1st of May, 2017.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system mainly affecting young adults. In addition to physical problems, the patients suffer from many psychological problems affecting their psychological well-being. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of group-based cognitive hypnotherapy on the psychological well-being of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis. This study was designed as a clinical trial with a pretest-posttest control group. From 60 patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis referred to Beheshti hospital in Yasuj, Iran, 45 patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected by the convenience sampling method. The patients were randomly assigned to intervention (23 individuals) and control (22 individuals) groups through stratified random allocation. After completing the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being, the intervention group attended eight sessions of group-based cognitive hypnotherapy on a weekly basis. The control group did not attend any intervention sessions. At the end of the eight intervention sessions, both groups completed the Ryff's Scale of Psychological Well-being again. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS software (Version 23). Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and two-way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were used in order to compare the groups. The results indicated that cognitive hypnotherapy had a significant effect on the total score of psychological well-being (F (45, 1) = 6.07, p = .018, η2 = 0.12) and the dimension of environmental mastery (p < .05). Therefore, it is recommended to use hypnotherapy to promote the psychological well-being of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive system disease with a high incidence rate and is common in women. The cause of IBS remains unclear. Some studies have shown that mental and psychological diseases are independent risk factors for IBS. At present, the treatment of IBS is mainly symptomatic treatment. Clinically, doctors also use cognitive behavioral therapy to improve patients' cognitive ability to diseases and clinical symptoms. In recent years, exercise therapy has attracted more and more attention from scholars. Improving the symptoms of IBS patients through psychosomatic treatment strategy may be a good treatment method. AIM To explore the effects of an intervention of cognitive behavioral therapy combined with exercise (CBT+E) on the cognitive bias and coping styles of patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D); and to provide a theoretical reference for the management of IBS. METHODS Sixty IBS-D patients and thirty healthy subjects were selected. The 60 IBS-D patients were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was treated with the CBT+E intervention, while the control group was treated with conventional drugs without any additional intervention. The cognitive bias and coping styles of the participants were evaluated at baseline and after 6 wk, 12 wk and 24 wk using the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ), Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS) and Pain Coping Style Questionnaire (CSQ) instruments, and the intervention effect was analyzed using SPSS 17.0 statistical software. RESULTS At baseline, the scores on the various scales showed that all subjects had cognitive bias and adverse coping styles. The IBS Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-SSS) scores, ATQ total scores, DAS scores and CSQ scores of the two groups were not significantly different (P > 0.05). Compared with baseline, after 6 wk of the CBT+E intervention, there were significant differences in the ATQ scores, the dependence and total scores on the DAS, and the catastrophization, distraction and prayer scores on the CSQ (P < 0.05). After 12 wk, there were significant differences in the scores for perfectionism on the DAS and in the scores for reinterpretation, neglect and pain behavior on the CSQ in the experimental group (P < 0.05). After 24 wk, there were significant differences in the vulnerability, dependence, perfectionism, and total scores on the DAS and in the catastrophization, distraction and prayer scores on the CSQ in the experimental group (P < 0.01). The IBS-SSS scores were negatively correlated with the ATQ and DAS total scores (P < 0.05) but were positively correlated with the CSQ total score (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Intervention consisting of CBT+E can correct the cognitive bias of IBS-D patients and eliminate their adverse coping conditions. CBT+E should be promoted for IBS and psychosomatic diseases.

Abstract
Introduction: Breast cancer is a major threat to women’s health and a common factor that can reduce their life expectancy. Complementary medicine such as reflexology is known to reduce fatigue severity in cancer patients. The present study aimed to cultivate the effect of reflexology on fatigue severity of patients with breast cancer. Methods: The present pre-post clinical trial recruited 57 patients with breast cancer and involved an experimental and a control group. All patients were livening in Ilam, Iran. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups of experimental (N=27) and control (N=30). The experimental group received reflexology for 4 sessions. Data were collected using Fatigue severity scale (FSS) and demographic information questionnaire. FSS was completed by the patients twice; before the intervention and 2 months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS and running t-test and ANOVA. Results: Results showed no significant difference in fatigue severity between experimental (45.44±5.30) and control (43.66±7.68) groups prior to the intervention (p>0.05). However, after conducting the intervention, a significant difference in fatigue severity was seen between the experimental (20.66±4.54) and control (40.36±9.58) groups (p=0.000). Conclusion: The present study showed that reflexology decrease fatigue severity in patients with breast cancer and community health nursing can to use of these complementary medicine to increase patients health conditions.

Abstract
There are very few studies in existence today that look at the value of hypnosis in palliative care.The aim of our study was to measure the impact of hypnosis on managing symptoms in palliative care. This quantitative retrospective monocentric observational study evaluated pain and patient satisfaction using monitoring and evaluation sheets, which included a rating scale before and after hypnosis sessions in a palliative care unit.For two years, thirty-seven patients participated in hypnosis sessions mostly for pain (41%) and anxiety (27%). 51% reported a decrease in symptoms, with 35% even reporting that the intensity of their symptoms vanished. Most of the patients were satisfied with the approach and at the end of the study some of them were able to recreate its effects by using self-hypnosis.Despite the small sample, the results confirm those found in the few palliative studies that do exist, particularly relating to the improvement of symptoms such as pain, anxiety, nausea, and respiratory disorders.

Abstract
This review summarizes the literature on QoL in early stage lung cancer patients who underwent surgery. PubMed and PsycINFO were searched. Twelve articles from 10 distinct studies were identified for a total of 992 patients. Five QoL measures were used. One study reported only on pre-surgical QoL, six only on post-surgical QoL and three studies reported on both pre- and post-surgical QoL. Timing for the administration of post-surgical QoL surveys varied. The literature on QoL in Stage I non-small-cell lung cancer patients is very sparse. Additional research is needed to explore the impact of different surgical approaches on QoL.

Abstract
This pilot study evaluated the possibility that 2 interventions hypothesized to increase slower brain oscillations (e.g., theta) may enhance the efficacy of hypnosis treatment, given evidence that hypnotic responding is associated with slower brain oscillations. Thirty-two individuals with multiple sclerosis and chronic pain, fatigue, or both, were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 interventions thought to increase slow wave activity (mindfulness meditation or neurofeedback training) or no enhancing intervention, and then given 5 sessions of self-hypnosis training targeting their presenting symptoms. The findings supported the potential for both neurofeedback and mindfulness to enhance response to hypnosis treatment. Research using larger sample sizes to determine the generalizability of these findings is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prostate and breast cancer can have a lot of negative consequences such as fatigue, sleep difficulties and emotional distress, which decrease quality of life. Group interventions showed benefits to emotional distress and fatigue, but most of these studies focus on breast cancer patients. However, it is important to test if an effective intervention for breast cancer patients could also have benefits for prostate cancer patients. METHODS Our controlled study aimed to compare the efficacy of a self-hypnosis/self-care group intervention to improve emotional distress, sleep difficulties, fatigue and quality of life of breast and prostate cancer patients. 25 men with prostate cancer and 68 women with breast cancer participated and were evaluated before (T0) and after (T1) the intervention. RESULTS After the intervention, the breast cancer group showed positive effects for anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep difficulties, and global health status, whereas there was no effect in the prostate cancer group. We showed that women suffered from higher difficulties prior to the intervention and that their oncological treatments were different in comparison to men. CONCLUSION The differences in the efficacy of the intervention could be explained by the baseline differences. As men in our sample reported few distress, fatigue or sleep problems, it is likely that they did not improve on these dimensions. Abstract
Psychosocial distress screening (DS) for cancer and head and neck cancer (HNC) patients is rapidly becoming the standard of care. DS is of particular importance for patients with HNC, given their heightened incidence of distress, depression, anxiety, suicide, quality of life impacts, and negative medical outcomes. In the absence of DS, distress is frequently missed in oncology settings. However, when identified, distress is highly responsive to treatment, with cognitive behavioral and behavioral medicine interventions demonstrating evidence of efficacy. Multidisciplinary HNC teams are uniquely positioned to implement effective DS programs and treatment tailored to HNC patients' psychological and medical vulnerabilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer patients experience various side effects during cancer therapy, often resulting in reduced quality of life and poor adherence to treatment. A limited range of proven interventions has been developed to target such side effects. While Tai Chi offers benefits for the health and well-being of breast cancer survivors, the effectiveness of Tai Chi across the treatment continuum has not been evaluated. Improved patient education and support has been suggested as a priority for breast cancer care. This pilot study assesses the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of "an integrative Tai Chi" (ANITA) program for breast cancer patients undergoing cancer therapy. METHODS/DESIGN This is a single-centre, two-arm feasibility RCT. Twenty-four patients with breast cancer who have undergone surgical treatment will be recruited from the Dunedin Hospital (New Zealand) over a 12-month period (from August 2017 to July 2018). Subject to informed consent, patients will be randomized to receive standard cancer treatment alone or standard cancer treatment plus the ANITA program, consisting of peer support, health education, and Tai Chi Ruler exercise. The program runs alongside the patient's adjuvant cancer therapy, which may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, antibody treatment, and/or antihormonal therapy. Analysis in this study will focus on process evaluation of participant recruitment, retention, treatment fidelity, acceptability of the program, and occurrence of adverse events. Clinical outcomes (i.e., fatigue, sleep quality, anxiety and depression and quality of life) will be assessed at baseline, and at 12 weeks and 24 weeks post-randomization. DISCUSSION Outcomes from this study will inform the feasibility and methodology for a future fully-powered RCT. Abstract
AIM To investigate medical decision-making from the thoracic surgeons' and patients' perspectives in early-stage lung cancer. PATIENTS & METHODS We conducted one focus group with thoracic surgeons (n = 15) and one with a group of early-stage lung cancer patients treated with surgery (n = 7). Focus groups were recorded, transcribed and coded for themes. RESULTS For surgeons, surgical procedure choice was a primary concern, followed by the surgical treatment plan decision-making process. Survivors focused primarily on the physical and mental health-related postsurgical burden for which they felt they were not well prepared and placed less emphasis on surgical decision-making. CONCLUSION As early-stage lung cancer mortality rates are improving, surgeons and patients can prioritize surgical approaches and postsurgical care that enhance quality of life.

The advantages of hypnosis intervention on breast cancer surgery and adjuvant therapy. Breast 2017; 37:114-118. Abstract
BACKGROUND In oncology, hypnosis has been used for pain relief in metastatic patients but rarely for induction of anesthesia. MATERIAL AND METHOD Between January 2010 and October 2015, 300 patients from our Breast Clinic (Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, Université catholique de Louvain) were included in an observational, non-randomized study approved by our local ethics committee (ClinicalTrials.gov - NCT03003611). The hypothesis of our study was that hypnosis intervention could decrease side effects of breast surgery. 150 consecutive patients underwent breast surgery while on general anesthesia (group I), and 150 consecutive patients underwent the same surgical procedures while on hypnosis sedation (group II). After surgery, in each group, 32 patients received chemotherapy, radiotherapy was administered to 123 patients, and 115 patients received endocrine therapy. RESULTS Duration of hospitalization was statistically significantly reduced in group II versus group I: 3 versus 4.1 days (p = 0.0000057) for all surgical procedures. The number of post-mastectomy lymph punctures was reduced in group II (1-3, median value n = 1.5) versus group I (2-5, median value n = 3.1) (p = 0.01), as was the quantity of lymph removed (103 ml versus 462.7 ml) (p = 0.0297) in the group of mastectomies. Anxiety scale was also statistically reduced in the postoperative period among the group of patients undergoing surgery while on hypnosis sedation (p = 0.0000000000000002). The incidence of asthenia during chemotherapy was statistically decreased (p = 0.01) in group II. In this group, there was a statistically non-significant trend towards a decrease in the incidence of nausea/vomiting (p = 0.1), and the frequency of radiodermitis (p = 0.002) and post-radiotherapy asthenia (p = 0.000000881) was also reduced. Finally, the incidence of hot flashes (p = 0.0000000000021), joint and muscle pain (p = 0.0000000000021) and asthenia while on endocrine therapy (p = 0.000000022) were statistically significantly decreased in group II. DISCUSSION Hypnosis sedation exerts beneficial effects on nearly all modalities of breast cancer treatment. CONCLUSION Benefits of hypnosis sedation on breast cancer treatment are very encouraging and further promote the concept of integrative oncology.

Abstract
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) significantly interferes with usual functioning because of the distressing sense of physical, emotional, and cognitive exhaustion. Assessment of CRF is important and should be performed during the initial cancer diagnosis, throughout cancer treatment, and after treatment using a fatigue scoring scale (mild-severe). The general approach to CRF management applies to cancer survivors at all fatigue levels and includes education, counseling, and other strategies. Nonpharmacologic interventions include psychosocial interventions, exercise, yoga, physically based therapy, dietary management, and sleep therapy. Pharmacologic interventions include psychostimulants. Antidepressants may also benefit when CRF is accompanied by depression.

Abstract
Radiotherapy is a common and effective treatment for women with breast cancer. However, radiotherapy has also been shown to adversely affect patients' emotional well-being. Currently, few mind-body interventions are designed to improve patients' quality of life during radiotherapy. One intervention which has demonstrated clinical efficacy in the breast cancer radiotherapy setting is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy plus Hypnosis. The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy plus Hypnosis on emotional distress in women with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy. One hundred patients were randomly assigned to either the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy plus Hypnosis (n = 50) or Attention Control (n = 50) group. Results revealed significant benefits of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy plus Hypnosis on emotional distress at the mid-point (d = 0.54), the conclusion (d = 0.64), and 4 weeks following the conclusion (d = 0.65) of radiotherapy (all ps < 0.05). In summary, results support further study of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy plus Hypnosis as an evidence-based intervention to reduce emotional distress in women with breast cancer. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy plus Hypnosis has the benefits of being brief, noninvasive, lacking side-effects, and producing beneficial effects which last beyond the conclusion of radiotherapy. Given these strengths, we propose that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy plus Hypnosis is a strong candidate for greater dissemination and implementation in cancer populations.
