Abstract
Exercise benefits patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) by addressing complications and dysfunctions. Elastic band exercise is cost-effective, but its safety, efficacy, and feasibility during dialysis are not well-established. The aim of this study is to investigate the physical and mental effects of intradialytic elastic band exercise in patients on MHD. Sixty patients on MHD were randomly assigned to the exercise or control group (30 patients/group). The control group received routine hemodialysis care, whereas those in the exercise group performed intradialytic elastic band exercises for 0.5-2 h during hemodialysis three times a week for 12 weeks. Physical function (Short Physical Performance Battery [SPPB]), cognitive function (Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA]), fatigue (14-item Fatigue Scale [FS-14]), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]), and anxiety and depression (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale [HAMA]/Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HAMD]) were assessed. The exercise group showed significant improvements in SPPB (p = 0.008) and MoCA (p < 0.001) scores compared to pre-intervention and control groups. FS-14 scores decreased significantly (p = 0.005). PSQI (p < 0.001) and HAMA (p < 0.001) scores improved post-intervention but not versus control. HAMD scores reduced significantly (p < 0.001). Satisfaction and recommendation scores were 9.57 and 9.71. In conclusions, intradialytic elastic band exercise improved physical and cognitive function and alleviated fatigue, sleep issues, depression, and anxiety in patients on MHD. With high compliance, no significant adverse events, and high patient satisfaction, it is recommended as a routine intervention during dialysis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep quality is a crucial aspect that can affect the health, job performance, and safety outcomes of operating room employees. However, the social and work-environmental factors that predict sleep quality remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the role of social relational quality and ethical climate as the predictors of sleep quality in employees of the operating room using hierarchical linear regression analysis. METHODS This cross-sectional and multi-center study was conducted on 232 operating room employees. Data were collected using the social relational quality scale, Hospital Ethical Climate Survey, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Pearson's correlation coefficient, ANOVA, t-test, and hierarchical multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. RESULTS The mean scores of social relational quality and standardized ethical climate were 54.80(SD = 6.35) and 3.40(SD = 0.68) in the operating room employees. The mean score of sleep quality was 6.70(SD = 3.66) which was in the poor range. The last step of regression analysis showed that profession (β=-0.22, p = .02) and social relational quality (β=-0.20, p = .03) had a significant proportion of the variance of sleep quality. Based on the model, work experience, profession, social relational quality, and ethical climate accounted for 15% of the changes in sleep quality in the operating room employees. DISCUSSION This study indicated that more than half of the operating room employees reported poor sleep quality. Moreover, profession and social relational quality were the predictors of sleep quality. Conducting interventions to improve social relational quality might enhance the sleep quality of operating room employees.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemodialysis patients suffer from physical and mental symptoms for which aromatherapy might be useful. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Melissa officinalis L. (Lemon Balm) essential oil inhalation on anxiety and the burden of symptoms in hemodialysis patients. METHODS This study is a randomized clinical trial with a pretest-posttest design. Sixty-eight hemodialysis patients were randomly divided into intervention (who underwent Melissa officinalis L. inhalation aromatherapy 3 times a week for one month) and control (who inhaled refined sweet almond oil) groups. The intervention in both groups was conducted during the hemodialysis session. The data were collected using the state-trait anxiety inventory and Dialysis Symptom Index. Data were analyzed through SPSS-25, using Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, t-tests and MANOVA. RESULTS Before the intervention, both groups were similar in terms of anxiety and symptoms burden (P > 0.05). However, after the intervention, a significant difference was found between the groups in terms of state and trait anxiety, and severity of constipation, nausea, vomit, diarrhea, swelling in legs, muscle cramps and shortness, worry, nervousness and anxiety, and trouble staying asleep. Moreover, after the intervention, a significant difference was observed between the groups regarding the prevalence of symptoms burden such as feeling anxious and having a dry mouth (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Melissa officinalis L. essential oil inhalation aromatherapy reduced the symptoms burden and anxiety in hemodialysis patients. Given the effectiveness of aromatherapy in hemodialysis patients, it is suggested that healthcare workers should use this complementary and integrative health to reduce the anxiety and symptoms burden in hemodialysis patients. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of Benson relaxation response technique (BRRT) on the quality of life (QOL) among patients with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). METHODOLOGY A quasi-experimental design was used to conveniently recruit 170 patients with SLE. Participants were divided into two groups, the control and the intervention group for which the BRRT intervention was administered. Utilising an online questionnaire, the QOL was assessed among the two groups, before and 2 months after the intervention, using the Arabic version of the short form 36-item health survey. RESULTS After 2 months of the intervention, the intervention group exhibited significantly higher levels in both components of QOL; physical (t(143.31)=15.35, p<0.001); and mental component (t(143.58)=12.35, p<0.001). Additionally, for the intervention group, the results revealed a statistically significant increase in the levels of both components from baseline measurement; physical (t(84)=-16.24, p<0.001) and mental component (t(84)=-12.93, p<0.001). CONCLUSION The findings demonstrate a notable positive impact of BRRT on QOL among patients with SLE. Healthcare professionals can potentially improve the overall well-being of patients with SLE and complement traditional treatment by implementing BRRT into their care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In clinical settings, continuous changes lead to increased professional stress, affecting the quality of life of nurses. Some complementary interventions may influence the improvement of the quality of life. This study aimed to determine the effect of Benson's relaxation technique on the operating room nurses' quality of life. METHODS In this clinical trial, 180 operating room nurses were randomly allocated to two groups: intervention (Benson's relaxation technique) and control (routine activity). The study was conducted from December 2021 to March 2022 in hospitals affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Benson's relaxation technique was performed twice daily by the intervention group for 8 weeks. Quality of life was measured before and after the intervention using the SF-36 questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21 software, with a significance level set at a P < 0.05. RESULTS After the intervention, the results showed that Benson's relaxation technique led to an increase in the quality of life in the intervention group (P < 0.0001). In terms of quality-of-life dimensions, significant improvements were observed in the intervention group in the domains of physical problems (P < 0.05), emotional problems (P < 0.05), general health (P < 0.05), pain (P < 0.0001), and social functioning (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences were found in the dimensions of physical functioning, energy, and emotional well-being. CONCLUSIONS Benson's relaxation technique can serve as a complementary method to improve various dimensions of the operating room nurses' quality of life. Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) face significant challenges; however, non-pharmaceutical interventions hold potential for enhancing their quality of life. This paper evaluates the effects of music therapy on various mental and physiological outcomes in patients undergoing HD. METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive database search conducted up to May 21, 2024, identified studies for inclusion based on PICOS criteria. The methodological quality of these studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and Review Manager 5.4. For the meta-analysis, R and Stata/SE 15.1 were used, applying a random-effects model in cases of significant heterogeneity, and a fixed-effects model when heterogeneity was minimal. RESULTS Twenty-four studies involving 1703 participants were analyzed. Music therapy significantly decreased anxiety (SMD: -0.72, 95 % CI: -0.97 to -0.46, I²: 83 %), pain (SMD: -1.22, 95 % CI: -1.68 to -0.75, I²: 93 %), depression (SMD: -0.85, 95 % CI: -1.31 to -0.39, I²: 77 %), stress (SMD: -0.93, 95 % CI: -1.17 to -0.68, I²: 41 %), and adverse reactions associated with HD (SMD: -0.67, 95 % CI: -0.88 to -0.46, I²: 0 %), all showing strong effect sizes (p < 0.001 for all). However, no significant changes were observed in sleep quality, fatigue, satisfaction with HD, systolic or diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, or finger temperature. A slight reduction in respiration rate (p = 0.0072) and an increase in oxygen saturation (p = 0.0056) were noted. While music therapy showed promising results, the notable heterogeneity in pain and anxiety outcomes suggests careful interpretation, although no significant publication bias was detected. CONCLUSION Music therapy has demonstrated encouraging outcomes in improving the well-being of patients undergoing HD, particularly in reducing anxiety, pain, and stress. However, due to notable heterogeneity and methodological issues such as small sample sizes and inconsistent blinding, further high-quality research is needed to confirm these findings and establish more robust evidence.

Abstract
Purpose The present research was conducted to assess the effect of the Benson relaxation technique on sleep quality and aggression among patients with bipolar type I disorder. Methods This study was conducted using a randomized clinical trial design with the participation of 60 patients with bipolar type I disorder (30 participants in each group) in Mashhad, Iran (IRCT20220108053659N1). The intervention group received the Benson relaxation technique for 21 days in a row, twice a day (in the morning and evening), under the supervision of an expert psychiatric nurse (On the first day, instruction was given on implementing BRT. In the subsequent days of the intervention, the nurse stayed by the patient's bedside for the entire relaxation process). Aggression and sleep quality were assessed using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, respectively, before and one week after the completion of the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-squared, Fisher's exact test, independent sample t-test, and analysis of covariance). Results The participants in the present study were individuals of both genders aged 18 and above. Based on the results, both groups were homogeneous regarding demographic characteristics. Prior to the intervention, the two groups of control and intervention were not significantly different from each other in terms of sleep quality (p = 0.870) and aggression (p = 0.961). After the intervention, in an intergroup comparison, a significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of the mean difference of aggression (p < 0.001) and sleep quality scores (p < 0.001). Conclusion Despite the favorable effect of this intervention, it is necessary to conduct more studies considering the broader aspects of interventions and related variables before including these interventions in the care plan of patients with bipolar type I disorder.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep is one of the most crucial basic human needs in Maslow's hierarchy, while sleep disorders are the most commonly occurring complications of chemotherapy. Objective This study was conducted to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation techniques on the sleep quality of patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods This study was a randomized clinical trial performed on patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Ninety cancer patients were selected by the convenience sampling method and randomly assigned into two groups; the progressive muscle relaxation group and the control group. Before the intervention, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire (PSQQ) was completed for patients in both groups. In the intervention group, progressive muscle relaxation was performed for 4 weeks (twice daily and 20 min each time). In the control group, patients only received routine care. After the intervention, the PSQQ was completed again for patients in both groups. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. Results The mean and standard deviation of age were 45.95 ± 10.26 years. The samples of the intervention and control groups were homogeneous in terms of demographic characteristics. The results showed a significant improvement in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index in the intervention group before and after the intervention (P < .001, Z = 5.09). However, this rate was not different in the control group. The sleep level of the intervention and control groups was not different at the beginning of the study. However, at the end of the study, the sleep score in the intervention group had decreased significantly (P < .001, Z = 3.52). Conclusion The results of the present study showed that progressive muscle relaxation improves the sleep quality of patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Therefore, relaxation can be considered a useful and effective intervention for improving sleep quality of patients with cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although many studies have investigated the effect of this method on cancer patients, no review of the available literature has been done. So, a literature review is conducted to evaluate all published literature on the Benson relaxation technique in cancer patients. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted. A systematic search of online electronic databases including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus Web of Science, PsycINFO, and EMBASE was performed using keywords extracted from Medical Subject Headings such as "Benson Relaxation Technique," "Cancer Patients," "Malignancy," and "Neoplasia" from the beginning to April 27, 2023. A total of 810 publications were assessed for relevance by title and abstract. The remaining 31 articles were examined using inclusion criteria for all Persian and English-language publications that evaluate the effectiveness of the Benson relaxation technique on cancer patients. We did not have gray literature in our review. The methodological quality of the included studies was appraised using specific checklists. RESULTS Finally, nine studies were included in this systematic review. Studies on breast cancer patients showed improvement in fatigue, nausea, vomiting, pain, shortness of breath, insomnia, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, treatment side effects, breast symptoms, arm symptoms, worry about hair loss, and scores of hope. Two studies were conducted among cervical cancer patients that showed a decrease in anxiety scores and an improvement in the quality of sleep. Another study on gastric cancer patients showed decreased Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching scores. CONCLUSION Overall, this systematic review showed that the Benson relaxation method could improve sleep quality, appetite, anxiety, and quality of life. Therefore, using the Benson relaxation technique is suggested to improve health-related outcomes in cancer patients.

Abstract
Background Most women of reproductive age suffer physical discomfort or distress in the weeks before menstruation. Even though symptoms are typically not severe enough to impede daily activities seriously, they occasionally can. Physical problems like breast discomfort and bloating can also be a problem. The most irritating symptoms are those that affect mood and behaviour. Women of reproductive age experience premenstrual syndrome frequently, necessitating study into non-pharmacological methods for symptom reduction. Methodology The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of Benson's relaxation technique to Laura Mitchell's physiological approach in patients with premenstrual syndrome. Study design was comparative parallel experimental study with patient-reported questionnaire data (online) collected before and post-intervention in tertiary hospital setting. Participants were 70 adult females aged 18 to 35 with premenstrual syndrome. Patients were administered Benson's relaxation technique once a day for a month versus Mitchell's relaxation technique once a day for a month. Both techniques were first taught for one session followed by home program to be performed by patients. The premenstrual syndrome questionnaire and a numerical pain rating scale were used to quantify premenstrual symptoms pre and post-intervention. Results The result revealed significant (p<0.01) improvement in premenstrual symptoms in both groups following the intervention. However, Bensons' relaxation technique was found to be more significant while alleviating the premenstrual symptoms. Conclusions When it comes to lowering the intensity of premenstrual syndrome in young people, Benson's relaxation method is superior to Mitchell's. Both approaches should be entrenched as a regular practice and can be employed on patients to improve their menstrual well-being.

Abstract
Benson's relaxation affects many symptoms among hemodialysis patients. A cluster-randomized active control clinical trial with three repeated measures; pre, 1-week, and 1-month post-intervention sought to evaluate the effectiveness of Benson's Relaxation on pain and perceived stress (P&PS) among hemodialysis patients. Two governmental hospitals were randomly assigned to intervention and control. Thirty-six participants were randomly selected; 18 were intervention, and 18 were controlled. The intervention group performed Benson's Relaxation twice a day for 10 minutes for 8 weeks after a training session. The control group received an educational session about Progressive Relaxation. Findings revealed a statistically significant reduction in the PSS-10 and PRI scores between pre-intervention and 1 month after-intervention (p < .001) and at 1 week after intervention and 1 month after-intervention (p < .001). A non-statistically significant reduction between pre-intervention and 1 week after-intervention (p > .05). Benson's Relaxation significantly relieved P&PS among hemodialysis patients but not after only 1 week of practicing.

Abstract
Background and Aims Primiparous women experience high levels of anxiety before cesarean section. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effects of the Benson Relaxation Technique (BRT) and Music Therapy (MT) on the anxiety of primiparous women prior to cesarean section. Methods A randomized controlled trial was carried out on 105 women scheduled for cesarean section. They were randomly assigned into three groups: BRT, MT, and control (n = 35 per group). The women in the BRT and MT groups performed exercises and listened to music, respectively, for 20 minutes prior to cesarean section. The State Anxiety Inventory was used to measure the women's anxiety in the groups before and after the intervention. Results Within-group comparisons showed that the women in the BRT (t = 5.61, p < 0.001, effect size (Cohen's d) = 0.94) and MT (t = 3.83, p = 0.001, d = 0.64) groups had significantly lower anxiety after the interventions compared to before the interventions. Also, between-group comparisons revealed that anxiety after the intervention was significantly lower in the BRT and MT groups compared to the control group (p = 0.007). Conclusions Although both of the BRT and MT helped with the reduction of anxiety among primiparous women before cesarean section, the BRT was shown more effective. These nonpharmacologic methods are safe and cost-effective and can improve well-being among women undergoing this invasive procedure. They can be used along with pharmacologic methods for reducing overreliance on medications.

Abstract
AIM: This research was carried out to investigate the effect of Benson relaxation techniques on the quality of sleep in cancer patients.
METHODS: This research was a quantitative research with quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design with control group. Research conducted in the room Class 3 Bougainvillea and Teratai RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto. The sample in this study was 20 respondents of the intervention group and 20 respondents of the control group. The intervention group received 6 times Benson relaxation intervention with frequency 3 times a day for 2 days and the control group was given standard care. The data were collected from January to February 2021. Quality of sleep was measured before and after the intervention using the Pittsburgh quality of sleep index (PSQI) questionnaire. The hypothesis test was performed using Mann–Whitney U-test aiming to measure the effect size using d Cohen.
RESULTS: The results obtained mean values for PSQI score with median (min-max) intervention group 3.50 (2.00–7.00) and control group 0.50 (−2.00–3.00) and the results obtained p = 0.001. Clinically and statistically, there was a significant effect of Benson relaxation on decreasing PSQI score. The effect size test results in 2.33, which means that Benson relaxation has a great effect on the decrease in PSQI score.
CONCLUSION: Benson relaxation clinically and statistically affects the decrease in PSQI score of cancer patients recommended in nursing interventions as one of the complementary therapies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the effect of Benson relaxation (BR) and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) techniques on the sleep quality of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. METHOD This study was a three-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial. 120 patients who underwent CABG surgery at two academic hospitals in an urban area of Iran were randomly allocated into three groups (40 per group): the BR, PMR, and control groups. Patients in the BR and the PMR groups performed relevant exercises twice a day for four weeks. Sleep quality was measured before and immediately after the intervention using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS Within-group comparison in the BR (t = 3.51, p = 0.001) and the PMR (t = 4.58, p < 0.001) group showed that the overall sleep quality showed a significant improvement after the intervention when compared to baseline. The between-group comparison showed that both the BR and PMR groups showed significant improvements in subjective sleep quality (F = 3.75, p = 0.02), habitual sleep efficiency (F = 4.81, p = 0.01), and overall sleep quality (F = 5.53, p = 005) when compared to the control group after the intervention. However, no statistically significant differences were identified among the three study groups in terms of sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep disturbances, sleeping medication, and daytime dysfunction after the intervention (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The study showed that a four-week program of both PMR and BR can be effective in the overall improvement of sleep quality in patients following CABG. Further research is required to replicate the findings of the present study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of three common interventions for tinnitus patients: notched music therapy, conventional music therapy, and counseling. STUDY DESIGN Randomized, single-blinded, controlled, three-arm trial. METHOD This study was conducted from January 2018 to January 2019. Eligible subjects were randomized into three groups. The first group received notched music therapy (n = 25), the second received conventional music therapy (n = 24), and the third received counseling only (n = 26). The three groups did not differ in terms of demographic data including age, sex, tinnitus duration, affected side, hearing level, side of tinnitus, and frequency of tinnitus. The patients were followed up on at month 1, 2, and 3 after initiation of therapy. RESULTS Tinnitus Handicap Inventory scores gradually decreased in all groups. The mean differences in Tinnitus Handicap Inventory score from baseline for patients who received notched music therapy, conventional music therapy, and counseling only were 20.49, 27.83, and 17.79 points, respectively (p < 0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference among the groups (p = 0.246). CONCLUSION There was no difference between the treatments. The selection of these therapies for tinnitus treatment may depend on the unique needs and proclivities of patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION clinicaltrials.in.th/TCTR20180225002.

Abstract
Background The aim of this article is to present a short review of noninvasive, nonpharmacological treatment methods used in somatic illnesses that fall under the umbrella of approach called behavioral medicine. Methods The narrative review method was applied in the study. Science paper databases, including PubMed, had been used to retrieve papers on therapeutic methods used in clinical setting that meet the broad criteria of behavioral medicine definition as stated in the Charter of International Behavioral Medicine Society Results Main groups of methods, disorders in which they are being employed and their effectiveness, have been identified. Conclusions Behavioral medicine is grouping treatment methods and interventions that hold large potential for clinical setting. Two groups of methods can be distinguished by the scrutiny and level of evidence gathered in their effectiveness assessment; for biofeedback, guided imagery, and hypnosis techniques, comprehensive evidence reports in the framework of U.S. Evidence Synthesis Program exist. Meditation techniques, disclosure therapies, and relaxation methods are less well assessed. Broader employment of behavioral medicine therapies in clinical setting is possible after addressing two major problems in the field, which are deficiencies in quality evidence of effectiveness for many of the methods and their insufficiencies in underlying therapeutic mechanism knowledge.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study compared the effects of Benson relaxation with progressive muscle relaxation on pain severity after laminectomy. DESIGN Three-arm randomized, nonblinded, and parallel group trial. METHODS The study was conducted with 93 patients who underwent lumbar laminectomy. Patients were randomly assigned to three groups of Benson relaxation + routine care (n = 31), progressive muscle relaxation + routine care (n = 31), and routine care (n = 31). The two relaxation methods were performed at 2 (time 1), 12 (time 2), and 24 (time 3) hours after patients' regaining full consciousness in postoperative wards. Pain severity was assessed using the visual analog scale once before laminectomy, before and also 20 minutes after each relaxation session. In the control group, pain severity was measured at the same times as in the two relaxation groups. FINDINGS Both Benson relaxation and progressive muscle relaxation resulted in a significant reduction in pain severity in comparison with the control group at all three measurement times (except at time 1 in the progressive muscle relaxation group). However, no significant differences were found between Benson relaxation and progressive muscle relaxation in any of the three times. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that both Benson and progressive muscle relaxation techniques can decrease acute postlaminectomy pain in the immediate postoperative period in adult patients.

Abstract
Introduction: The nursing intervention program is a strategy for the rehabilitation process among fracture patients The Levine conceptual model program is a practical nursing theory using energy conservation, energy, structural integrity, personal integrity, and social integrity. The study aims to identify the effect of nursing intervention based on Levine's theory of the rehabilitation process among fracture patients.Methods: A quasi-experimental with equivalent control group design was applied in this study. Sixty-two respondents were selected into the experimental group (n=31) and control group (n=31) by using a consecutive sampling technique. The patients' rehabilitation on fracture included sleep disorder, pain, anxiety, and family support as dependent variables. Researchers used the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) instrument, the Numeric Rating Scale, the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, and the family support scale. Data were analyzed using a Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.Results: The results showed a significant effect of patients' recovery on fracture among patients after receiving Levine-based nursing intervention than before receiving the intervention (p <0.05). The results of research on the nursing intervention program are based on Levine's conceptual model of sleep disorders, pain, anxiety, and family support (p <0.05). In conclusion, there was significantly different nursing intervention based on Levine in energy conservation, energy, structural integrity, personal integrity, and social integrity.Conclusion: The nursing intervention program based on Levine's conceptual model could be part of independent nursing intervention to deal with recovery in fracture patients. Based on this description, the researcher is interested in examining the effect of nursing intervention based on Levine’s conceptual model program on rehabilitation process among fracture patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Many patients with renal failure due to the chronic nature of the disease and prolonged dialysis treatment experience dramatically reduced ability to perform daily living activities (ADLs). This study was aimed at evaluating the effects of Benson relaxation technique (BRT) on ADLs in hemodialysis (HD) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This single-blind, randomized, parallel-group, controlled trial study was conducted among 65 hemodialysis patients. They were randomly divided into intervention (n = 33) and control (n = 32) groups. In the intervention group, BRT was performed twice daily for 20 min in a month. The control group received no intervention except for usual care. Data were assessed using the Nottingham Extended Activitıes of Daily Living (NEADL) scale. RESULTS The mean age of the subjects was 50.32 ± 7.23 years and 78.4% (n = 51) were male. The odds of higher degree of independence regarding NEADLS was about 25% greater in the intervention group as compared to the control one (OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.44; P = 0.001). CONCLUSION Findings suggest that using BRT as a non-pharmacological intervention may effectively enhance the ADLs of HD patients.

Abstract
Introduction Providing social support for patients under hemodialysis treatment can reduce their psychological, social, and physical problems. The present study aimed at determining the effect of peer support on hopefulness in patients under hemodialysis. Methods This clinical trial with a pre/posttest design was conducted on 128 patients who had referred to the hemodialysis centers of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2019. The patients were randomly divided into an intervention and a control group. The patients in the intervention group were supported by their peers for eight weeks and were provided with the usual care, but the controls were only provided with the usual care. The data were collected using Snyder Hope Scale. Then, the data were entered into the SPSS software, version 18 and were analyzed using independent t-test and paired t-test. Results At baseline, the participants in both groups were similar with respect to the mean scores of hope and its subscales (p>0.05). However, there was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of hope and its subscales eight weeks after the intervention (p<0.001). Conclusion The results confirmed the effect of peer support on increasing hope among the patients under hemodialysis. Peer support in informational, emotional, instrumental, and spiritual forms could create a positive incentive and increase hope among the patients. Abstract
Poor sleep quality is a major issue for haemodialysis (HD) patients, with as many as 80% reporting problems with sleep. Poor sleep has a negative impact on HD patients' mental health, quality of life and day-to-day functioning, along with increasing morbidity and mortality risks. Non-pharmacological interventions have fewer side-effects compared to hypnotic medications and have been shown to be effective in research studies. Ruth Edley examines acupressure, massage, aerobic and non-aerobic exercise and cognitive behavioural therapy. All have been shown in small-scale studies to improve sleep quality in HD patients, although no intervention has been found to improve sleep quality to normal levels. It is recommended that further research using larger, randomised controlled trials is undertaken to increase confidence in the benefits of these interventions.

Abstract
Background: Many patients on maintenance hemodialysis experience sleep disorders. This problem is related to depression, anxiety, hospitalizations, chronic medical conditions, decreased quality of life, and increasing mortality rate in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. The objective of this research is to determine the impact of massage therapy by hot stone on quality of sleep in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Materials and Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial conducted on 60 patients on maintenance hemodialysis. They were assigned via random allocation process into two groups of study: intervention group (n = 30), or control group (n = 30). Patients in the experimental group received massage therapy by hot basalt stone for 12 séances. During the massage therapy, each of five basalt stones were placed at the sites of the fifth, fourth, third, second, and first chakra. Control group received their treatment as usual without any massage therapy. Using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the global score and its components were computed in both groups of study, two times (before the intervention and 1 month after the intervention). Results: Although there were not any baseline differences between the two groups of study for the mean of global PSQI score (P = 0.92) before the study, the mean of global PSQI score in the intervention group, after the intervention decreased to 5.7 ± 3.06, but in the control group sleep quality increased to 10.7 ± 3.6. The difference between the mean of global score of PSQI among two groups of study after the massage therapy was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Applying massage therapy by hot stone in hemodialysis patients may contribute in enhancing their quality of sleep.

Abstract
PURPOSE This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effect of an 8-weeks-yoga intervention on quality of life and upper extremity edema volume in women with breast cancer related lymphedema. METHODS This was a controlled trial with pre-post design. A total of 40 women with breast cancer related lymphedema were randomly assigned into an intervention or control groups. The intervention group participated in a yoga exercise class for 8 weeks, in a twice a week instructor-led practice and once a week home practice. Outcomes were EORTC QLQ_C30 to measure quality of life, and water displacement volume-meter to measure upper extremity edema volume. The outcomes were evaluated at baseline, 4th and 8th week. Data were analyzed using SPSS. RESULTS Four weeks after the intervention, a significant difference was observed between the groups with respect to role functioning of quality of life (P = 0.03). Eight weeks after the intervention, a significant difference was observed between groups concerning physical and emotional functioning of quality of life (P < 0.05). The changing trend in physical, role, emotional, and cognitive functioning had increased, and in some scales such as fatigue, pain, insomnia, and financial difficulties the scores were reduced in the intervention group. Regarding edema volume, no significant difference was found between both groups on the 4th and 8th week after the intervention (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION As yoga exercise might improve physical, role, and emotional functioning of quality of life as well as reduce fatigue, pain, and insomnia, using this intervention can be suggested amongst women with breast cancer related lymphedema.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disorders are commonly experienced by people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Several approaches for improving sleep quality are used in clinical practice including relaxation techniques, exercise, acupressure, and medication. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness and associated adverse events of interventions designed to improve sleep quality among adults and children with CKD including people with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) treated with dialysis or kidney transplantation. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Kidney and Transplant Register of Studies up to 8 October 2018 with the Information Specialist using search terms relevant to this review. Studies in the Register are identified through searches of CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE, conference proceedings, the International Clinical Trials Register (ICTRP) Search Portal and ClinicalTrials.gov. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-randomised RCTs of any intervention in which investigators reported effects on sleep quality. Two authors independently screened titles and abstracts of identified records. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias for included studies. The primary outcomes were sleep quality, sleep onset latency, sleep duration, sleep interruption, and sleep efficiency. Risks of bias were assessed using the Cochrane tool. Evidence certainty was assessed using the GRADE approach. We calculated treatment estimates as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes or mean difference (MD) or standardised MD (SMD) for continuous outcomes to account for heterogeneity in measures of sleep quality. MAIN RESULTS Sixty-seven studies involving 3427 participants met the eligibility criteria. Thirty-six studies involving 2239 participants were included in meta-analyses. Follow-up for clinical outcomes ranged between 0.3 and 52.8 weeks (median 5 weeks). Interventions included relaxation techniques, exercise, acupressure, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), educational interventions, benzodiazepine treatment, dopaminergic agonists, telephone support, melatonin, reflexology, light therapy, different forms of peritoneal dialysis, music, aromatherapy, and massage. Incomplete reporting of key methodological details resulted in uncertain risk of bias in many studies.In very low certainty evidence relaxation techniques had uncertain effects on sleep quality and duration, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Studies were not designed to evaluate the effects of relaxation on sleep latency or hospitalisation. Exercise had uncertain effects on sleep quality (SMD -1.10, 95% CI -2.26 to 0.05; I2 = 90%; 5 studies, 165 participants; very low certainty evidence). Exercise probably decreased depression (MD -9.05, 95% CI -13.72 to -4.39; I2 = 0%; 2 studies, 46 participants; moderate certainty evidence) and fatigue (SMD -0.68, 95% CI -1.07 to -0.29; I2 = 0%; 2 studies, 107 participants; moderate certainty evidence). Compared with no acupressure, acupressure had uncertain effects on sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale 0 - 21) (MD -1.27, 95% CI -2.13 to -0.40; I2 = 89%; 6 studies, 367 participants: very low certainty evidence). Acupressure probably slightly improved sleep latency (scale 0 - 3) (MD -0.59, 95% CI -0.92 to -0.27; I2 = 0%; 3 studies, 173 participants; moderate certainty evidence) and sleep time (scale 0 - 3) (MD -0.60, 95% CI -1.12 to -0.09; I2 = 68%; 3 studies, 173 participants; moderate certainty evidence), although effects on sleep disturbance were uncertain as the evidence certainty was very low (scale 0 - 3) (MD -0.49, 95% CI -1.16 to 0.19; I2 = 97%). In moderate certainty evidence, acupressure probably decrease fatigue (MD -1.07, 95% CI -1.67 to -0.48; I2 = 0%; 2 studies, 137 participants). Acupressure had uncertain effects on depression (MD -3.65, 95% CI -7.63 to 0.33; I2 = 27%; 2 studies, 137 participants; very low certainty evidence) while studies were not designed to evaluate the effect of acupressure on HRQoL, anxiety, or hospitalisation. It was uncertain whether acupressure compared with sham acupressure improved sleep quality (PSQI scale 0 to 21) because the certainty of the evidence was very low (MD -2.25, 95% CI -6.33 to 1.82; I2 = 96%; 2 studies, 129 participants), but total sleep time may have been improved (SMD -0.34, 95% CI -0.73 to 0.04; I2 = 0%; 2 studies, 107 participants; low certainty evidence). 2 =2 =There were no studies designed to directly examine and/or correlate efficacy of any interventions aimed at improving sleep that may have been attempted for the spectrum of sleep disordered breathing. No studies reported treatment effects for children. Adverse effects of therapies were very uncertain. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The evidence base for improving sleep quality and related outcomes for adults and children with CKD is sparse. Relaxation techniques and exercise had uncertain effects on sleep outcomes. Acupressure may improve sleep latency and duration, although these findings are based on few studies. The effects of acupressure were not confirmed in studies in which sham acupressure was used as the control. Given the very low certainly evidence, future research will very likely change the evidence base. Based on the importance of symptom management to patients, caregivers and clinicians, future studies of sleep interventions among people with CKD should be a priority.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze clinical and sociodemographic properties of the patients as measured by the "Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-HADS" including the subscale regarding anxiety (HAD-A) in emergency department (ED) and to detect the effect of a session of Benson relaxation method (BRM) on high anxiety level. METHODS Adult patients presented to the state hospital ED in seven days were recruited in this prospective study. Patients with high (≥8) scores were randomized to the treatment or control groups. They were asked to pursue BRM to alleviate anxiety. RESULTS Six hundred thirty-four patients were recruited (mean age 44.1 and 52% were female). Patients with acute exacerbation or with psychiatric illness, with a systemic disease and higher acuity level had higher HAD-A scores (P < .05). BRM group had a mean score change higher than controls (7.2 ± 2.9 vs 3.4 ± 2.6, t test, P = .026). CONCLUSIONS Patients who underwent BRM had larger decreases in HAD-A scores than others.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of massage therapy on pain intensity and anxiety in patients who have undergone tibial shaft fracture surgery. DESIGN This study was a randomized clinical trial with a pre-post design. As the study included 2 treatment groups, it was a parallel study. SETTING Khatam-Al-Anbia Hospital in Zahedan, Iran, between July and August 2017. PATIENTS In all, 66 patients who underwent a tibial shaft fracture surgery were enrolled and randomly assigned to intervention and control groups (33 patients each). INTERVENTION The intervention included a 10-minute foot massage (5 minutes per leg) using sweet almond oil, the most common lubricant used in massage therapy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS Data were collected using pain numeric rating scale and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory before and after intervention. RESULTS After intervention, the mean scores for pain intensity, and anxiety in the intervention and control groups were 4.72 (0.97) and 5.72 (0.91), and 42.84 (6.50) and 58.36 (10.37), respectively. A significant difference was noted between the intervention and control groups concerning pain intensity and anxiety. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that massage therapy reduced pain intensity and anxiety in patients who underwent tibial shaft fracture surgery. Therefore, using massage as a noninvasive and acceptable intervention is suggested in orthopaedic surgery, especially after tibial shaft fracture surgeries. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Therapeutic Level I. Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study attempts to develop and determine the effect a rational-emotive-behaviour-therapy-based self-management programme can have on the self-efficacy, self-care, depression and dyssomnia of patients undergoing early renal dialysis. BACKGROUND When renal dialysis is initiated, changes in everyday life are inevitable, and patients can suffer from both psychological and physical symptoms. Hence, to obtain the best results from renal dialysis, active self-management is required. DESIGN Quasi-experimental and longitudinal. METHODS Forty-eight early-stage renal dialysis patients registered for and undergoing renal dialysis at a hospital located in S city participated in this study. These individuals were divided into an experimental and control group. The former group engaged in a self-management programme consisting of eight weekly sessions of 50 min in duration, while the latter received traditional nursing care. Data were collected from June 2012-May 2014 through the use of a preliminary survey, a postsurvey that was distributed after the eight sessions of the self-management programme had been completed, and a follow-up survey allocated 4 weeks after the postsurvey. Data collection was conducted using the Self-efficacy Scale, Self-care Practice Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and Korean Sleep Scale, and a repeated-measures ANOVA was used to perform analysis. RESULTS The experimental group significantly differed from the control group in regard to self-efficacy (p = 0.006) and self-care (p = 0.031), but differences in terms of depression (p = 0.492) and dyssomnia (p = 0.141) were nonsignificant. In the experimental group, the depression decreased but then increased again, while the dyssomnia gradually decreased. CONCLUSIONS The provision of a rational-emotive-behaviour-therapy-based self-management programme that involves lectures, discussions, teach-backs, demonstrations and posters explaining diet choices improves the self-efficacy and self-care of patients receiving renal dialysis. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Rational-emotive-behaviour-therapy-based self-management programmes can be used in clinical nursing sites to improve the self-efficacy and self-care of early renal dialysis patients.

Abstract
CONTEXT Hemodialysis (HD) patients experience a heavy symptom burden that leads to a decreased quality of life. Pharmacological treatment is effective but costly and has adverse effects. Exercise is a promising approach for symptom management, but the effect of exercise on restless legs syndrome (RLS), depression, sleep quality, and fatigue in HD patients is still uncertain. OBJECTIVES This meta-analysis was conducted to identify whether exercise training is beneficial in the treatment of the symptoms of RLS, depression, poor sleep quality, and fatigue in patients receiving HD. METHODS A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing exercise training with routine care on RLS, depression, sleep quality, and fatigue among HD patients. Quality assessment was conducted using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and RevMan 5.3 was used to analyze the data. RESULTS Fifteen RCTs that met our inclusion criteria were included. The pooled effect size showed that exercise training was effective on RLS (P < 0.001), depression (P < 0.001), and fatigue (P < 0.001). However, effect size combinations for sleep quality were not performed owing to the sensitivity analysis results. CONCLUSION Exercise training may help HD patients to reduce the severity of RLS, depression, and fatigue. More high-quality RCTs with larger samples and comparative RCTs focused on different exercise regimens are needed.

Abstract
Introduction: Nursing staffs expose to a high level of anxiety. This study aimed to compare the effect of Benson's relaxation and systematic desensitization methods for decreasing the anxiety score of nurses. Materials and Methods: In a randomized clinical trial, 72 female nurses were assigned randomly to three different groups. Benson's relaxation and systematic desensitization were used as intervention beside control group. After intervention, the Spielberger state-trait anxiety inventory was used for measuring the anxiety score. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey test, and paired t-test were applied for comparing three group scores. Results: The ANOVA test showed that a significant difference among three groups regarding scores of posttrait and poststate anxiety (P < 0.05). The Tukey test showed that both Benson's relaxation and systematic desensitization methods were effective in decreasing of the anxiety score of nurses. Moreover, the mean change in trait and state anxiety scores at Benson's relaxation and systematic desensitization groups was more than control group, respectively, and was statistically significant. Conclusion: Both Benson's relaxation and systematic desensitization methods are effective in improvement of the state and trait dimensions of anxiety. However, these methods could be applied in stressful situation among medical staffs of students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of 8-week respiratory functional training program on pain tolerance, sleep, and urinary antioxidant and cortisol levels in 18 patients with fibromyalgia. METHODS Participants underwent a 12-week intervention: 4 weeks as control and 8 weeks of breathing exercises. Pain tolerance assay was done by using an algometer, whereas sleep quality was evaluated by actigraphy and by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Cortisol and antioxidant levels were determined using commercial assay kits. RESULTS Increases in the pain tolerance threshold were detected in the occiput point after one month of intervention as well as in the low cervical and second rib points after one and two months. Actigraphy revealed a decrease in sleep latency, whereas sleep questionnaire showed improvements in sleep quality, sleep duration and sleep efficiency. No changes in cortisol and antioxidant levels were detected. CONCLUSION The 8-week breathing exercise intervention reduced pain and improved sleep quality.

Abstract
Sleep disorders have a profound and well-documented impact on overall health and quality of life in the general population. In patients with chronic disease, sleep disorders are more prevalent, with an additional morbidity and mortality burden. The complex and dynamic relationship between sleep disorders and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain relatively little investigated. This article presents an overview of sleep disorders in patients with CKD, with emphasis on relevant pathophysiologic underpinnings and clinical presentations. Evidence-based interventions will be discussed, in the context of individual sleep disorders, namely sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome and excessive daytime sleepiness. Limitations of the current knowledge as well as future research directions will be highlighted, with a final discussion of different conceptual frameworks of the relationship between sleep disorders and CKD.

Abstract
Study Objectives. To evaluate the effect of mind-body interventions (MBI) on sleep. Methods. We reviewed randomized controlled MBI trials on adults (through 2013) with at least one sleep outcome measure. We searched eleven electronic databases and excluded studies on interventions not considering mind-body medicine. Studies were categorized by type of MBI, whether sleep was primary or secondary outcome measure and outcome type. Results. 1323 abstracts were screened, and 112 papers were included. Overall, 67 (60%) of studies reported a beneficial effect on at least one sleep outcome measure. Of the most common interventions, 13/23 studies using meditation, 21/30 using movement MBI, and 14/25 using relaxation reported at least some improvements in sleep. There were clear risks of bias for many studies reviewed, especially when sleep was not the main focus. Conclusions. MBI should be considered as a treatment option for patients with sleep disturbance. The benefit of MBI needs to be better documented with objective outcomes as well as the mechanism of benefit elucidated. There is some evidence that MBI have a positive benefit on sleep quality. Since sleep has a direct impact on many other health outcomes, future MBI trials should consider including sleep outcome measurements.

Abstract
We conducted a meta-analysis to summarise and quantify the effects of non-pharmacological interventions on sleep quality improvement in uraemic patients on dialysis. We defined the primary outcome as the change of sleep quality before and after interventions (evaluated by polysomonography or subjective questionnaires such as Pittsburgh sleep quality index, PSQI). The change of fatigue scales, inflammatory cytokines and adverse events were analysed as secondary outcomes. Twelve eligible randomised controlled trials and one prospective cohort study were identified. All three identified non-pharmacological interventions could result in a greater PSQI score reduction compared to controls: 1) cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) versus sleep hygiene education (standardised mean difference (SMD) 0.85, 95% CI 0.37-1.34); 2) physical training versus no training (SMD 3.36, 95% CI 2.16-4.57) and 3) Acupressure (including other acupoints massages) versus control (SMD 1.77, 95% CI 0.80-2.73). In terms of subscores, we found that CBT may shorten sleep latency, alleviate sleep disturbance and reduce the use of sleep medications. The finding of the cohort study suggested that intradialytic aerobic exercise training improved sleep quality in haemodialysis patients with restless leg syndrome. In conclusion, in dialysis-dependent patients, CBT could shorten sleep latency, alleviate sleep disturbance and reduce the use of sleep medications. Acupressure (including other acupoints massages) and exercise training are promising interventions but the results in these subgroups should be interpreted cautiously due to the concern of methodological quality and potential confounding factors.
