Prof. Veroux has an academic interest in traslational and clinical research in organ transplantation. He was involved in many international peer-reviewed and industry-funded clinical trials on the development of new immunosuppressive regimens in kidney transplant recipients. He was the recipient of the Italian Ministry of Health Grant in 2015, entitled “The gastric submucosal space and lymph nodes as alternative sites for islet allo-transplantation using clinically applicable immunosuppression”, which demonstrated for the first time that lymph nodes could not be used for islet transplantation. The research project was performed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Research Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. In addition, he is involved in clinical outcome research in patients undergoing transplantation, including de novo post-transplant cancer and the management of post-transplant infections. For long time, he has been interested in Fabry disease and Fabry disease-associated nephropathy. He was involved in many multicentre studies on Fabry disease, exploring the clinical symptoms which are suggestive of progression of the disease. He is currently the Director of “Multidisciplinary Research Center for the diagnosis and the treatment of Fabry disease and organ transplantation” of the University of Catania, which has been developed for the first time in Italy, as a multidisplinary group focused on the diagnosis and management of Fabry disease. Under his directorship, the Center is focused on research projects aiming to find early clinical and biological markers of Fabry disease.
