Trained as an occupational therapist, Prof. Hector Tsang has had more than 10 years of clinical experience in psychiatric and geriatric rehabilitation before moving to PolyU in 1997. He was promoted to Professor in 2010. Prof. Hector Tsang has been Head of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences since 2017. He was appointed Cally Kwong Mei Wan Professor in Psychosocial Rehabilitation in 2018 and promoted to Chair Professor of Rehabilitation Sciences in July 2019. At the same time, Professor Tsang is also Honorary Professor of the University of Hong Kong, and Visiting Professor in many well-known universities, including Peking University, Sichuan University and Kunming Medical University. In April 2019, Professor Tsang was appointed as the "Scholar of Nanshan" by Guangzhou Medical University.
Prof. Tsang has been focusing on psychiatric and social rehabilitation for people with severe mental illness (SMI) and mind-body or mindfulness interventions for the past two decades. He has altogether secured more than 160 million research grants and has more than 270 publications. His H index is 48, and his papers have been cited more than 8,800 times. In recent years, Professor Tsang leads two large-scale consultancy projects for the Government of the HKSAR, including the completed Review of Rehabilitation Programme Plan (RPP), and Needs and Support Required of Carers of Elderly Persons and of Persons with Disabilities in Hong Kong. The latter research is also nearing completion.
The researches of Prof. Tsang have received international recognition. For example, he has been ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists and was named in the “Updated science-wide author databases of standardised citation indicators”, compiled by Standford University. In addition, he was rated by Expertscape as the top 1% of published authors worldwide on Exercise Movement Techniques in the past 10 years and is maked as “Expert”.
