Dr. Kazuo Koyanagi is Associate Professor of Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, Tokai University School of Medicine, Isehara, Japan. Dr. Koyanagi graduated from Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan, and passed the National Examination for Medical Practitioners at 1992. After that, he completed education and training program as a residency for general and gastrointestinal surgery at Keio University Hospital. He received the degree of PhD at Keio University with his research paper which examined the usefulness of telomerases activity in esophageal cancer at 2001. He has studied abroad as a research fellow at Cornel University, Strang Cancer Center from 2002 to 2003 and at John Wayne Cancer Institute from 2003 to 2005. He had engaged in the profession of esophageal surgical oncology and thoracoscopic minimally invasive esophagectomy. His clinical practice involves a lot of esophageal and gastric cancer cases. As an investigator, he focuses on radical esophagectomy, especially three-field dissection with multimodal therapeutic strategy in esophageal cancer. He has been involved in several nationwide clinical trials for multimodality approaches in esophageal cancer as a delegate member of Japan Clinical Oncology Group. Dr. Koyanagi is a member of many academic societies including International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, American Association for Cancer Research, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is also a councilor of many academic societies, such as Japan Esophageal Society, Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery, Japan Surgical Association, and Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopic Society. He is a Board Certified fellow of Japan Surgical Society, Japan Society of Gastroenterological Surgery, Japan Esophageal Society, Japan Society for Cancer Therapy, Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopic Society, and Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery. Dr. Koyanagi is also an editorial board member of several journals, and he has published many articles based on his clinical and basic researches.
