Abstract
OBJECTIVE The obesity epidemic, driven by a complex interplay of environmental and biological factors, remains a significant global health challenge. Herein, we investigate the impact of food insecurity, characterized by unpredictable food access, on the regulation of body weight and body composition in mice. METHODS Male and female C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a combination of intermittent fasting and calorie restriction to simulate food insecurity. RESULTS Our new model demonstrates that food insecurity increases fat mass and decreases lean mass in both sexes on a standard chow diet. Additionally, high-fat diet-fed male mice exposed to the food insecurity paradigm show decreased lean mass despite being in positive energy balance. Transcriptomic analysis of white adipose tissue from food-insecure male mice revealed upregulation of metabolic pathways associated with fat mass expansion and downregulation of immune response-related transcripts. CONCLUSIONS These findings underscore the role of food insecurity in driving metabolic adaptations that favor fat storage. Understanding this paradoxical link between food insecurity and adiposity is crucial for developing targeted interventions to address the disproportionate incidence of obesity in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hormonal and age-related differences in body composition require tailored approaches for predicting new-onset type 2 diabetes (NODM). Previous studies lacked in-depth stratified analyses. We investigate sex- and age-specific body composition indices associated with NODM. DESIGN AND SETTING A retrospective, nationwide, population-based cohort study. PARTICIPANTS We analysed 4 058 891 adults who underwent a health examination in the year 2009 and 10-year follow-up data from the National Health Insurance Service. OUTCOME MEASURE NODM risk stratified by sex and age groups in 20-year intervals according to quartiles or per 1 SD increase in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), a body shape index (ABSI) and weight-adjusted waist index (WWI). RESULTS Among the total subjects, 625 715 individuals (15.4%) developed NODM during median 10-year follow-up. The fourth quartile of WHtR showed the highest HR for NODM compared with the first quartile among various indices across the entire population (HR 2.54, 95% CI 2.52 to 2.57). In men, WHtR consistently exhibited the strongest association with NODM across all age groups in analysis based on 1 SD increase; ages 20-39 years (HR 1.54, 95% CI 1.53 to 1.55), ages 40-59 years (HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.38 to 1.39), ages 60-79 years (HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.22 to 1.24). In women, the most relevant body composition index for NODM varied by age group; BMI for ages 20-39 years (HR 1.48, 95%CI 1.47 to 1.49), WHtR for ages 40-59 years (HR 1.46, 95% CI 1.45 to 1.47) and WC for ages 60-79 years (HR 1.23, 95%CI 1.22 to 1.24). CONCLUSION WHtR was the strongest predictor of NODM in men across all ages, while the relevant indices varied by age group in women. These findings highlight the need for sex- and age-specific body composition assessments in predicting NODM risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity, measured by body mass index, is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the role of body composition, including body fat percentage and lean body mass (LBM), in cardiovascular outcomes has not been well studied in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). This study aims to evaluate the association of body composition with cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality in patients with CAD. METHODS AND RESULTS Body composition was obtained via bioelectrical impedance analysis from 1291 patients with CAD before starting cardiac rehabilitation. Patients were divided into quintiles by body composition and analyzed in total and after sex stratification. All-cause mortality and a composite of major adverse cardiovascular events, including acute coronary syndrome, coronary revascularization, heart failure hospitalization, and stroke, were primary study outcomes. In the total cohort adjusted analyses, body mass index, body fat percentage, and LBM were not predictors of all-cause mortality or major adverse cardiovascular events. In sex-stratified analyses, among women, the third LBM quintile was associated with decreased risk of all-cause mortality compared with the lowest LBM quintile (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.07 [95% CI, 0.01-0.57]; P=0.01). No other body composition variables were associated with all-cause mortality or major adverse cardiovascular events in either sex. CONCLUSIONS In women with CAD, moderate LBM was associated with lower mortality when compared with low LBM, whereas body fat percentage and body mass index were not associated with mortality or major adverse cardiovascular events in either sex. Future research studying the implications of changes in body composition on outcomes in men and women with CAD is warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE Diabetes is a chronic disease with a significant socio-economic burden. Recognizing its risk factors and gender differences within its physio-pathological mechanisms may allow early diagnosis. This review aims to summarize the current evidence on gender differences in terms of prevalence, risk factors and pathogenesis for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes. METHODS A comprehensive search of English-language articles was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library until July 2024. We selected all studies that assessed gender differences on risk factors for diabetes and prediabetes. RESULTS T1D is an autoimmune disease, with a multifactorial pathogenesis. Contrary to most autoimmune diseases, it has a male gender bias, with a male predominance incidence after puberty, for which the involvement of hormones has been hypothesized in addition to genetic predisposition. In T2D, the accumulation of visceral adipose tissue is recognized as the main predisposing factor for insulin resistance and consequent β-cells loss and dysfunction. Sex hormones influence fat disposition resulting in different body composition between males and females and different metabolic impact. Gender differences in dietary patterns and socio-cultural determinants also influence the risk of T2D. Also, a gender-related risk factor has been detected in prediabetes; indeed, females are at greater risk of impaired glucose tolerance than males. CONCLUSIONS Evidence shows the existence of gender differences in risk factors for T1D, T2D and prediabetes. This suggests that gender should be considered in prevention and screening programs, with the goal of reducing incidence or making an early diagnosis.

Abstract
Background/Objectives. An elevated body mass index (BMI) has been added to the new American Heart Association atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk model. Our goal in this study was to examine the relationships between BMI and traditional and non-traditional ASCVD risk factors. Methods. We measured levels of blood glucose, insulin, lipids, lipoproteins, sterols, fatty acids, markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, and hormones in 226,000 middle-aged and elderly subjects (55% women) and associated those parameters to BMI in 5 groups (BMI 20-25, 25.1-30, 30.1-35, 35.1-40, and >40 kg/m2). Results. BMI and age were inversely correlated in both sexes. All of the traditional and non-traditional ASCVD risk markers, except low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), changed significantly in unfavorable ways in both sexes with increasing BMI. The largest changes were observed in the high sensitivity C-reactive protein, which increased 6- and 8-fold, and insulin, which increased 4- and 3-fold between the lowest and highest BMI groups in men and women, respectively. Although the LDL-C levels changed little, small dense LDL-C and triglyceride levels increased significantly with increasing BMI. Markers of cholesterol synthesis were positively associated with BMI, while markers of cholesterol absorption and omega-3 fatty acids were inversely associated with BMI. Concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and the athero-protective, large-size HDL particles were also inversely associated with BMI. Our analysis indicated that the associations between an elevated BMI and unfavorable changes in major ASCVD risk factors were independent of age in both sexes. Moreover, we observed that ASCVD risk factors started changing unfavorably with increasing BMI even in the normal weight range (BMI 20-25 kg/m2). Conclusions. An elevated BMI is associated with unfavorable changes in traditional and non-traditional ASCVD risk factors independent of age. Therefore, maintaining a normal BMI, preferably by an active lifestyle, and, if necessary, weight-managing medication, is very important to avoid developing conditions leading to ASCVD.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the impact of body roundness index (BRI) on the 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality in Chinese adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS We utilized data from a nationwide prospective cohort of 165 785 Chinese adults (aged ≥40 years, free of CVD and cancer at baseline), which was extracted from the China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort (4C). Cox regression and restricted cubic splines quantified BRI-outcome associations and identified optimal BRI cutoffs. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 10.1 years, we documented 10 538 CVD events and 8679 deaths. A monotonic increasing dose-response association was observed between BRI and CVD risk, while BRI and all-cause mortality exhibited a U-shaped relationship (p for non-linear <0.001), with the nadir at a BRI of 3.9. Gender differences indicated that increased CVD risk was associated with higher BRI in men. As age increases, the excess risk of CVD and mortality associated with BRI diminishes, with a significant harmful effect of low BRI observed on mortality in individuals aged ≥75 years. Moreover, the inclusion of BRI in the model significantly enhanced the C-statistic for CVD prediction by 0.00412 (p <0.001) and for mortality prediction by 0.00045 (p = 0.0097). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate a positive association between BRI and CVD and a U-shaped association between BRI and mortality. These findings underscore the importance of the BRI in assessing the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality, particularly when considering different genders and age groups.

Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus [DM) is a fast-increasing non-communicable disease in South Africa, with a prevalence of 11.3%. The present study aimed to longitudinally investigate the association of carotid intima-media thickness [CIMT) progression and cardiovascular risk factors in the T2DM and non-DM rural black population of South Africa. Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted in the Dikgale Mamabolo Mothiba Surveillance area between 2014 and 2023 by the Africa Wits INDEPTH Partnership for Genomic Research (AWI-Gen). The IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 27 was used to analyze data. The paired T-test was used to determine the mean differences between baseline and follow-up. Longitudinal estimates of the association of CIMT with CVD risk factors in the T2DM and non-DM groups were analyzed using linear mixed models. Results: The baseline mean age was 51.64 years. There was a significant increase in CIMT (left and mean CIMT), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and pulse rate in the T2DM and non-DM groups. In the T2DM group, there was a strong significant association between age (2.20 mm), LDL-C (4.30 mm), SBP (4.57 mm), and waist/hip ratio (0.24 mm) with CIMT progression. The non-DM group revealed a significant association between LDL-C (0.001 mm), SBP (1.41 mm), and CIMT progression. Conclusion: CIMT was associated with other main CVD-related risk factors (age, LDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, TC/HDL-C ratio, waist/hip ratio, and SBP). CIMT progression was more pronounced in the T2DM group than non-DM, suggesting a higher risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular complications in T2DM individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although obesity is typically correlated with adverse outcomes in various diseases, certain acute critical illnesses exhibit a phenomenon known as the obesity paradox. This study evaluated sex-specific differences in the prognostic implications of the body mass index (BMI) of patients with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). DESIGN A multicenter retrospective cohort study. SETTING Data from eight tertiary hospitals in Korea. PATIENTS A total of 3805 critically ill patients receiving CRRT. Patients were categorized into four BMI groups: underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS There were 2308 male and 1497 female patients. The 90-day mortality risk significantly differed among BMI groups in the overall patient population and the male subpopulation but not the female subpopulation. Following adjustment for confounding variables, the 90-day mortality risk was higher in the underweight group than in the obese group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.20; 95% CI, 1.05-1.36; p = 0.006). Among male patients, the 90-day mortality risk was higher in both the underweight and normal weight groups than in the obese group (underweight: HR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.10-1.53; p = 0.002 and normal weight: HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.04-1.35; p = 0.010); however, no such association was observed among female patients. Subgroup analysis demonstrated the obesity paradox in male patients of old age, with septic AKI, or with low albumin levels. CONCLUSIONS There were sex differences in the association between BMI and mortality in critically ill patients with severe AKI. Although the precise distribution of fat mass and muscle mass was not identified, obese male patients had a more favorable prognosis, which was not evident among female patients. These findings highlight the importance of considering sex-specific factors in understanding the complex relationship between obesity and mortality in critically ill patients with AKI.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The accumulation of fat in the body, especially visceral fat, is associated with various cardiometabolic conditions such as diabetes mellitus and fatty liver. The reasons for the accumulation of this fat are diverse. Some studies, also in the working population, have shown a clear association between sociodemographic variables and health habits with scales that assess overweight and obesity. This study aims to determine how certain sociodemographic variables, such as age, gender, and socioeconomic level, as well as certain healthy habits like physical activity and tobacco consumption, affect the levels of body and visceral fat. Materials and Methods: We conducted a descriptive and cross-sectional study involving 8590 Spanish workers. The percentage of body and visceral fat was measured using a bioimpedance analysis with a Tanita DC 430MA device. Results: Both the average values and the prevalence of elevated body and visceral fat increase with age and decrease with social class and lower levels of physical activity. These values are higher in smokers. A multivariate analysis shows that the variables most influential in increasing the risk of high levels of both body and visceral fat are age and low levels of physical activity. Conclusions: The profile of a person at high risk of having elevated body and visceral fat levels is an older male with a low socioeconomic status who smokes and leads a sedentary lifestyle.

Abstract
Given the increased prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults in Colombia, estimating the effect of sociodemographic factors on overweight and obesity is crucial for creating and implementing public health policies. A pooled analysis was performed using a multinomial logistic regression model through Colombian Nutritional Situation Surveys held in 2010 and 2015. The study included Colombian adults between 18 and 64 years old (n = 162,119). Overall, the prevalence of obesity increased from 16.47 percent in 2010 to 18.67 percent in 2015, being higher in women than in men in both surveys. Multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that the most critical factor of being overweight and obese were older age, having a higher level of education, being engaged in household activities, and living in regions other than the country's capital. Additionally, for obesity, belonging to the Afro Colombian racial-ethnic group and being a woman were associated with an increased probability. In conclusion, these results provide more information on the sociodemographic factors related to overweight and obesity, which will help focus public health policies on higher-risk populations, such as racial-ethnic communities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stress is associated with obesity through several mechanisms, including coping methods used in stressful situations. However, long-term prospective studies investigating stress-induced eating and drinking in parallel and their relationships with weight are scarce. PURPOSE We examined the prevalence of stress-induced eating and drinking and their associations with body mass index (BMI) among women and men during a 30-year follow-up, as well as BMI trajectories from early adulthood to middle age. METHODS Participants of a Finnish cohort study were followed by questionnaires at the ages of 22 (N = 1656), 32 (N = 1471), 42 (N = 1334), and 52 (N = 1160). Their coping methods were evaluated by asking how common it was for them to act in certain ways when they encountered stressful situations. We used linear regression analysis to examine the associations between coping methods and BMI, and latent growth models to analyze the BMI trajectories. RESULTS The prevalence of stress-induced eating was higher among women than men throughout the follow-up, whereas stress-induced drinking was more common among men at 22 and 32 years of age. Stress-induced eating was associated with higher BMI at all ages among women, and from the age of 32 among men. Eating as a persistent coping method over the life course was associated with a higher and faster growth rate of BMI trajectories. Stress-induced drinking was associated with higher BMI in middle age, and with a faster growth of BMI among men. CONCLUSIONS Effective, appropriate stress management may be one essential factor in preventing weight gain in the adult population.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a progressive arterial disease arising from imbalanced lipid metabolism and a maladaptive immune response. The lymphatic system ensures tissue fluid homeostasis, absorption of dietary fats and trafficking of immune cells to draining lymph nodes, thereby potentially affecting atherogenesis. Endothelial cell-specific deletion of Pannexin1 (Panx1) in apolipoprotein E-deficient (Apoe-/-) mice increased atherosclerosis, suggesting a protective role for Panx1 channels in arterial endothelial function. Here, we investigated the role of Panx1 in lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) in the initiation and the progression of atherosclerosis. Male or female Prox1-CreERT2+Panx1fl/flApoe-/- and Panx1fl/flApoe-/- mice were fed a high cholesterol diet (HCD) for 6 or 10 weeks. Tamoxifen-induced deletion of Panx1 was performed before or after 4 weeks of HCD. Body weight and serum lipid profiles were determined. The atherosclerotic plaque burden was assessed by Sudan-IV staining on thoracic-abdominal aortas and in aortic roots. Plaque composition was determined by immunohistochemistry. No differences in serum cholesterol, LDL and HDL were observed between genotypes and between sexes after HCD. Bodyweight, serum triglycerides and free fatty acid levels were higher before and after 6 weeks of HCD in male Prox1-CreERT2+Panx1fl/flApoe-/- and control Panx1fl/flApoe-/- mice compared to females of the same genotypes, which was associated with more lipids and inflammatory cells in their atherosclerotic plaques. In contrast, the atherosclerotic plaque burden was higher in female mice. The progression of atherosclerosis in male mice was not different between genotypes. However, female Prox1-CreERT2+Panx1fl/flApoe-/- mice showed enhanced progression of atherosclerosis compared to Panx1fl/flApoe-/- controls of the same sex. In addition, atherosclerotic lesions in female, but not in male, Prox1-CreERT2+Panx1fl/flApoe-/- mice showed T cell enrichment. Altogether, our results reveal differential sex-dependent effects of Panx1 in lymphatic endothelium on the progression of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The link between regional body fat distribution and overactive bladder (OAB) in prior epidemiological research has been uncertain. Our objective is to assess the relationship between increased regional body fat and the prevalence of OAB. METHODS Within this analysis, 8,084 individuals aged 20 years and older were selected from NHANES surveys conducted from 2011 to 2018. The evaluation of OAB symptoms utilized the overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS). Fat mass (FM) across various regions was quantified employing dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which assessed total FM, trunk FM, arm FM, and leg FM. The fat mass index (FMI) was calculated as the ratio of fat mass (kg) to the square of height (meters). Data weighting was performed in accordance with analysis guidelines. A linear logistic regression model was employed to assess the correlation between regional FMI and the occurrence of OAB. Stratified analyses were also conducted. RESULTS The study found significant associations between total FMI and limb FMI with OAB. After adjusting for all variables in the analysis, higher total FMI (OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.02-1.12) was linked to an increased risk of OAB. Trunk FMI (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.03-1.22), arm FMI (OR = 1.59, 95% CI = 1.20-2.10), and leg FMI (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.01-1.25) demonstrated significant correlations with OAB. The weighted associations between total FMI and limb FMI with OAB incidence showed no significant differences among most subgroups. CONCLUSIONS The data indicates a correlation between higher regional FMI and increased OAB risk across different populations.

Abstract
CONTEXT Systemic inflammation plays a pivotal role in the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that circulating levels of calprotectin, a myeloid cell-derived biomarker of inflammation, is associated with the development of new-onset T2D in the general population. METHODS A total of 4815 initially nondiabetic participants of the Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-stage Disease (PREVEND), a prospective population-based cohort study, were assessed for plasma levels of calprotectin at baseline. Circulating levels of calprotectin were investigated for potential associations with the risk of new-onset T2D, defined as a fasting plasma glucose level of 7.0 mmol/L or greater, a random plasma glucose level of 11.1 mmol/L or greater, a self-reported physician-based diagnosis of T2D, the use of glucose-lowering drugs, or any combinations thereof. RESULTS Median plasma calprotectin levels were 0.49 (0.35-0.69) mg/L. Plasma calprotectin levels were significantly associated with the risk of new-onset T2D (hazard ratio [HR] per doubling 1.42 [95% CI, 1.22-1.66]; P < .001). The association remained independent of adjustment for age and sex (HR 1.34 [95% CI, 1.14-1.57]; P < .001), but not after further adjustment for potentially confounding factors (HR 1.11 [95% CI, 0.90-1.37]; P = .326), with adjustment for hyperlipidemia and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein explaining the loss of significance. Stratified analyses showed significant effect modification by hypertension, history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) (Pinteraction ≤ .001 for each), and the use of lipid-lowering drugs (Pinteraction ≤ .05), with higher HRs in individuals without hypertension, without history of CVD, with below-median HOMA-IR, and in those not using lipid-lowering drugs. CONCLUSION Elevated plasma levels of calprotectin are associated with a higher risk of developing T2D in the general population and may represent a moveable inflammatory biomarker. This association, however, does not represent a direct effect, and seems dependent on hyperlipidemia and systemic inflammation.

Abstract
Background Neurocognitive impairment is a condition that makes it difficult for a person to make decisions that affect memory, learning new things, concentration on daily activities, and can range from mild to severe forms. It is a major health problem, less known and less addressed complication of diabetes mellitus. Objectives The aim of the study is to assess prevalence of neurocognitive impairment and associated factors among diabetic mellitus patients. Methods We conducted an institutional-based cross-sectional study involving 512 diabetic patients under follow-up at XXX Specialized Hospital from March 1 to April 30, 2023. Data on cognition, behavior, and depression were collected using standardized tools, including the Mini Mental State Examination for cognition, the CAGE assessment tool for alcohol-related behavior, and the PHQ-9 for depression. These assessments were conducted through face-to-face interviews and chart reviews. A diagnosis of diabetes is confirmed in adults when fasting blood glucose levels exceed 126 mg/dl in three consecutive follow-up measurements. Data entry was performed using Epidata version 4.6, and analysis was conducted using SPSS version 26. Variables with a P-value < 0.25 in bivariate analysis were included in multivariable logistic regression. Statistical significance was set at P ≤ 0.05 with a 95% CI. Results were presented using tables, graphs, and descriptive text. Results The prevalence of neurocognitive impairment among diabetic patients at XXX Comprehensive Specialized Hospital was 28.3% [95% CI: 24.57-32.39]. Factors associated with this impairment included being female (AOR=2.29 [95% CI: 1.43-3.67]), rural residence (AOR=3.16 [95% CI: 2.01-4.95]), comorbidity (AOR=3.30 [95% CI: 2.08-5.23]), diabetes duration of 6-10 years (AOR=1.72 [95% CI: 1.01-2.94]), diabetes duration >10 years, and blood sugar level >126 mg/dl (AOR=2.25 [95% CI: 1.42-3.57]). Patients are encouraged to adhere to proper medication regimens to effectively control their blood glucose levels. This study found a high prevalence of neurocognitive impairment (NCI) among diabetic patients, affecting about one-fourth based on MMSE scores. Key risk factors identified include female gender, rural residence, comorbidities, longer duration of diabetes, and elevated blood glucose levels.

Abstract
Background: The relationship between obesity and respiratory diseases has been widely explored. In this context, the Weight-Adjusted Waist Index (WWI) has emerged as a novel metric for assessing visceral fat. This study aims to evaluate the association between WWI and the risk of emphysema in the U.S. population, by utilizing data from the 2001-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using NHANES data from 2001 to 2018. Logistic regression models were applied to assess the relationship between WWI and emphysema risk. Interaction and subgroup analyses were performed to explore effect modifiers. Results: Our study included a total of 44,949 American adults. The results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed an association between WWI and the incidence of emphysema. In the fully adjusted model, the probability of developing emphysema was 1.5 times higher in the group with WWI > 10.46 compared to those with WWI ≤ 10.46, with an odds ratio of [1.5 (1.1, 1.9), p = 0.003]. Subgroup analysis showed stronger associations among males, non-Hispanic Whites, and individuals with hypertension. Furthermore, we used a two-piece linear regression model and found a nonlinear association between WWI and emphysema, with a breakpoint at 12.5. Conclusions: Our findings indicate a significant association between WWI levels and emphysema. Larger-scale prospective studies are needed to further explore the role of WWI in emphysema.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gallbladder and biliary tract cancer (GBTC) is a significant health burden in China, exacerbated by the rising prevalence of high body mass index (BMI). Understanding the trends and factors contributing to mortality and disability associated with GBTC is crucial for targeted public health interventions. METHODS We utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study to assess the burden of GBTC attributable to high BMI in China from 1990 to 2021. Age-standardized rates of deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and years of life lost (YLLs) were analyzed. Joinpoint regression and decomposition analyses were conducted to evaluate trends and identify contributing factors, including aging, population growth, and epidemiological changes. Gender-specific differences were also assessed. RESULTS In 2021, GBTC deaths attributable to high BMI in China reached 4,053, with males experiencing a higher overall burden than females, particularly in older age groups. While females showed a higher mortality and overall burden in the 60 to 79 age range, this trend reversed in older age brackets, with males experiencing steeper increases in mortality and disability-related indicators beyond age 80. The age-standardized DALYs rate mirrored this pattern, with higher rates in males in advanced age groups. From 1990 to 2021, China saw a steady increase in GBTC burden attributable to high BMI, contrasting with a global decline. Joinpoint analysis indicated marked rises in mortality and DALYs rates after 2005, especially in males. Decomposition analysis identified population growth and aging as major drivers of increased deaths, while epidemiological changes primarily contributed to rising DALYs, with a stronger impact observed in males. CONCLUSIONS The burden of GBTC attributable to high BMI in China has increased substantially over the last three decades, driven by population growth, aging, and epidemiological shifts. The trends highlight a growing gender disparity, with males experiencing a greater rise in mortality and disability. Public health strategies targeting obesity and metabolic risk factors are critical to mitigating the increasing GBTC burden.

Abstract
Background: Sex-based differences are common among diseases. We aimed to investigate the differences in colonoscopy indications and its findings between males and females. Methods: A large, multi-center, cross-sectional, retrospective study included all colonoscopies performed between 2016 and 2021 in seven endoscopy departments. The indications and findings of the procedures were compared between males and females. Results: A total of 151,411 (52.6%) women and 136,519 (47.4%) men were included, aged 56.54 ± 12.9 years and 56.59 ± 12.7. Cecal intubation was similar (95.6% vs 95.5%, p = 0.251). More females had excellent or good bowel preparation compared to males (71.4% vs 65.6%). Colonoscopy due to abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and anemia was higher in females compared to males (15% vs 9.9%, 3.9% vs 2.2%, and 7.6% vs 4.9%, p < 0.001, respectively), while positive FOBT, rectal bleeding and post-polypectomy surveillance and screening were more common indications among males (9.5% vs 7.8%, 10.7% vs 7.8%, and 10.8% vs 7.1%, respectively). On colonoscopy, males were found to have significantly higher colorectal cancer and polyps (0.5% vs 0.4% and 35.1% vs 24.6%). Polyp detection rates were lower in females across all indications, whereas diverticulosis rates were higher in males. However, a clinically significant difference regarding diverticulosis was observed only in patients with anemia as the indication. Conclusions: Notable differences exist between males and females in terms of the indications and findings on colonoscopy. This highlights the need for identifying the factors contributing to these differences and the developing sex-specific approaches for the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases.

Abstract
AIMS To compare the predictive abilities of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-corrected BMI (wBMI), a body shape index (ABSI), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) for the incidence of type 2 diabetes and determine the practical cut-off values for the Japanese population. METHODS This study used data from 155,623 participants who had medical checkups with Panasonic Corporation between 2008 and 2021. Predictive abilities of anthropometric indices were evaluated at 13 years using time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. RESULTS 8,800 developed type 2 diabetes during the study period. The area under the ROC curve for the WHtR was high (0.717, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.710-0.724), with cut-off value of 0.497 in men, while those for wBMI (0.829, 95 % CI: 0.808-0.848) and WHtR (0.826, 95 % CI: 0.806-0.845) were high in women, with cut-off values of 18.6 kg/m and 0.510, respectively. It was also showed WHtR was the most effective in men, while WHtR and wBMI outperformed WC and were comparable to BMI in women for predicting type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS WHtR demonstrated superior effectiveness in predicting type 2 diabetes in men, while both WHtR and wBMI showed higher effectiveness than WC and were almost equivalent to BMI in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between low muscle mass (LMM) and depression, with a specific focus on identifying the sex-specific relationship between LMM and depression in a large sample. METHODS This population-based cross-sectional study involved 292,922 community-dwelling adults from 2012 to 2019. Measurements were taken using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD) scale and body composition analyses. Depression was defined as a CESD score ≥ 16, and severe depression as a CESD score ≥ 22. LMM was defined as an appendicular muscle mass/height2 below 7.0 kg/m2 in men and below 5.4 kg/m2 in women. Sex-based multivariable logistic regression analyzed the LMM-depression association, adjusting for confounders, with depression status and severe depression status as dependent variables. RESULTS Both men and women in the LMM group had an increased odds of depression (men, adjusted odds ratio = 1.13 [95% confidence interval = 1.03-1.12]; women, 1.07 [1.03-1.23]) and severe depression (men, 1.20 [1.05-1.36]; women, 1.10 [1.04-1.15]) compared to those in the control group. Men showed a stronger association between LMM and the presence of depression (p for interaction = 0.025) and the presence of severe depression (p for interaction = 0.025) compared to women. CONCLUSIONS Decreased muscle mass was independently associated with increased chances of depression and severe depression in both sexes, with a significantly stronger association in men compared to women. This highlights the potential significance of LMM as a predictor of depression, particularly in men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity-related cardiometabolic comorbidity is common in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, sex differences and MDD recurrence may modify the MDD-obesity-link. METHODS Sex-specific associations of MDD recurrence (single [MDDS] or recurrent episodes [MDDR]) and obesity-related traits were analyzed in 4.100 adults (51.6% women) from a cross-sectional population-based cohort in Germany (SHIP-Trend-0). DSM-IV-based lifetime MDD diagnoses and MDD recurrence status were obtained through diagnostic interviews. Obesity-related outcomes included anthropometrics (weight, body mass index, waist- and hip-circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio), bioelectrical impedance analysis of body fat mass and fat-free mass, and subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) from abdominal magnetic resonance imaging. Sex-stratified linear regression models predicting obesity-related traits from MDD recurrence status were adjusted for age, education, and current depressive symptoms. RESULTS 790 participants (19.3%) fulfilled lifetime MDD criteria (23.8% women vs. 14.5% men, p<0.001). In women, MDDS was inversely associated with anthropometric indicators of general and central obesity, while MDDR was positively associated with all obesity-related traits, except waist-to-hip ratio and fat-free mass. In women, MDDR versus MDDS was associated with higher levels of obesity across all outcomes except fat-free mass. In men, MDD was positively associated with SAT regardless of MDD recurrence. Additionally, lifetime MDD was positively associated with VAT in men. Results remained significant in sensitivity analyses after exclusion of participants with current use of antidepressants. CONCLUSIONS The MDD-obesity association is modified by MDD recurrence and sex independent of current depressive symptoms. Accounting for sex and MDD recurrence may identify individuals with MDD at increased cardiometabolic risk.

Abstract
Heat stress due to climate warming can significantly affect the synthesis of sex hormones in male adolescents, which can impair the ability of the hypothalamus to secrete gonadotropin-releasing hormone on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, which leads to a decrease in luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, which ultimately negatively affects spermatogenesis and testosterone synthesis. For optimal spermatogenesis, the testicular temperature should be 2-6 °C lower than body temperature. Heat stress directly affects the testes, damaging them and reducing testosterone synthesis. Additionally, chronic heat stress abnormally increases the level of aromatase in Leydig cells, which increases estradiol synthesis while decreasing testosterone, leading to an imbalance of sex hormones and spermatogenesis failure. Low levels of testosterone in male adolescents lead to delayed puberty and incomplete sexual maturation, negatively affect height growth and bone mineral density, and can lead to a decrease in lean body mass and an increase in fat mass. In order for male adolescents to acquire healthy reproductive capacity, it is recommended to provide sufficient nutrition and energy, avoid exposure to heat stress, and provide foods and supplements to prevent or repair testosterone reduction, germ cell damage, and sperm count reduction caused by heat stress so that they can enter a healthy adulthood.

Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review aimed to compare the effect of contrast media (CM) dose adjustment based on lean body weight (LBW) method versus other calculation protocols for abdominopelvic CT examinations. METHOD Studies published from 2002 onwards were systematically searched in June 2024 across Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, Google Scholar and four other grey literature sources, with no language limit. Randomised controlled trials (RCT) and quasi-RCT of abdominopelvic or abdominal CT examinations in adults with contrast media injection for oncological and acute diseases were included. The comparators were other contrast dose calculation methods such as total body weight (TBW), fixed volume (FV), body surface area (BSA), and blood volume. The main outcomes considered were liver and aortic enhancement. Titles, abstracts and full texts were independently screened by two reviewers. RESULTS Eight studies were included from a total of 2029 articles identified. Liver parenchyma and aorta contrast enhancement did not significantly differ between LBW and TBW protocols (p = 0.07, p = 0.06, respectively). However, the meta-analysis revealed significantly lower contrast volume injected with LBW protocol when compared to TBW protocol (p = 0.003). No statistical differences were found for contrast enhancement and contrast volume between LBW and the other strategies. CONCLUSION Calculation of the CM dosage based on LBW allows a reduction in the injected volume for abdominopelvic CT examination, ensuring the same image quality in terms of contrast enhancement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The allometric body shape index (ABSI) and hip index (HI), as well as multi-trait body shape phenotypes, have not yet been compared in their associations with inflammatory markers. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between novel and traditional anthropometric indexes with inflammation using data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and UK Biobank cohorts. METHODS Participants from EPIC (n = 17,943, 69.1% women) and UK Biobank (n = 426,223, 53.2% women) with data on anthropometric indexes and C-reactive protein (CRP) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. A subset of women in EPIC also had at least one measurement for interleukins, tumour necrosis factor alpha, interferon gamma, leptin, and adiponectin. Four distinct body shape phenotypes were derived by a principal component (PC) analysis on height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist (WC) and hip circumferences (HC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). PC1 described overall adiposity, PC2 tall with low WHR, PC3 tall and centrally obese, and PC4 high BMI and weight with low WC and HC, suggesting an athletic phenotype. ABSI, HI, waist-to-height ratio and waist-to-hip index (WHI) were also calculated. Linear regression models were carried out separately in EPIC and UK Biobank stratified by sex and adjusted for age, smoking status, education, and physical activity. Results were additionally combined in a random-effects meta-analysis. RESULTS Traditional anthropometric indexes, particularly BMI, WC, and weight were positively associated with CRP levels, in men and women. Body shape phenotypes also showed distinct associations with CRP. Specifically, PC2 showed inverse associations with CRP in EPIC and UK Biobank in both sexes, similarly to height. PC3 was inversely associated with CRP among women, whereas positive associations were observed among men. CONCLUSIONS Specific indexes of body size and body fat distribution showed differential associations with inflammation in adults. Notably, our results suggest that in women, height may mitigate the impact of a higher WC and HC on inflammation. This suggests that subtypes of adiposity exhibit substantial variation in their inflammatory potential, which may have implications for inflammation-related chronic diseases.

Abstract
Obesity, primarily characterized by excessive fat accumulation, is a multifactorial chronic disease with an increasing global prevalence. Despite the well-documented epidemiology and significant advances in understanding its pathophysiology and clinical implications, the impact of sex is typically overlooked in obesity research. Worldwide, women have a higher likelihood to become obese compared to men. Although women are offered weight loss interventions more often and at earlier stages than men, they are more vulnerable to psychopathology. Men, on the other hand, are less likely to pursue weight loss intervention and are more susceptible to the metabolic implications of obesity. In this narrative review, we comprehensively explored sex- and gender-specific differences in the development of obesity, focusing on a variety of biological variables, such as body composition, fat distribution and energy partitioning, the impact of sex steroid hormones and gut microbiota diversity, chromosomal and genetic variables, and behavioural and sociocultural variables influencing obesity development in men and women. Sex differences in obesity-related comorbidities and varying effectiveness of different weight loss interventions are also extensively discussed.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is significantly higher in men versus women. Increased prevalence is observed in postmenopausal women, suggesting that age and sex (hormones) influence MASLD development and progression. Molecular data further reveal that sex regulates the innate immune responses with an essential role in MASLD progression. To date, there has been limited focus on the role of innate immune sexual dimorphism in MASLD, and differences between men and women are not considered in the current drug discovery landscape. In this review, we summarize the sex disparities and innate immune sexual dimorphism in MASLD pathogenesis. We further highlight the importance of harnessing sexual dimorphism in identifying therapeutic targets, developing pharmacological therapies, and designing (pre-) clinical studies for the personalized treatment for MASLD.

Abstract
This study conducted data on 15,446 adults to explore the impact of flavonoids on weight-adjusted waist index (WWI). This was a nationwide cross-sectional study among US adults aged 20 years or older. Dietary intake of flavonoids was assessed through 24-h recall questionnaire. WWI was calculated by dividing waist circumference (WC) by the square root of weight. We utilized weighted generalized linear regression to evaluate the association between flavonoids intake and WWI, and restricted cubic splines (RCS) to explore potential non-linear relationships. Our findings indicated that individuals with lower WWI experienced a notable increase in their consumption of total flavonoids, flavanones, flavones, flavan-3-ols, and anthocyanidins intake (β (95% CI); -0.05(-0.09, -0.01); -0.07(-0.13, 0.00); -0.07(-0.11, -0.02); -0.06(-0.11, 0.00); -0.13(-0.18, -0.08), respectively), with the exception of flavonols and isoflavones. Additionally, consumption of total flavonoids, flavonols, flavanones, isoflavones, and flavan-3-ols had a non-linear relationship with WWI (all P for non-linearity < 0.05). Furthermore, the effect of total flavonoids on WWI varied in race (P for interaction = 0.011), gender (P for interaction = 0.038), and poverty status (P for interaction = 0.002). These findings suggested that increase the intake of flavonoids might prevent abdominal obesity, but further prospective studies are requested before dietary recommendation.

Abstract
Introduction This study assesses the impact of dietary modification, specifically sugary snack restriction, in conjunction with a brisk walking program on overweight management in young overweight women, with a focus on changes in body composition and glucose metabolism. Method An 8-week randomized controlled trial was conducted amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing a remote intervention approach to comply with health guidelines and ensure participant safety. The study's remote nature highlights adaptability in health interventions during challenging periods, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Twenty-one overweight Korean women aged 20-39, with an average BMI of 24.6, were selected for the study. They were divided into two groups: one engaging in brisk walking and the other combining this exercise with a sugary snack restriction, demonstrating the study's focus on comparative intervention efficacy. Results The exercise-only group showed notable reductions in glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR (p < 0.05), and total cholesterol levels (p < 0.01). In contrast, the group that combined exercise with dietary modification displayed more pronounced improvements in body weight, fat mass, and waist circumference (p < 0.05). This differential outcome emphasizes the added benefit of integrating dietary control with physical activity. Discussion The findings suggest that adding a dietary component, particularly a sugary snack restriction, to an exercise regimen can significantly enhance the effectiveness of overweight management in young women. This study underscores the importance of holistic lifestyle interventions that combine dietary and physical activity modifications for improved health outcomes.

Abstract
AIMS We aimed to assess the association of a low carbohydrate diet score (LCD) with the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) using Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study (MCCS) data. METHODS Between 1990 and 1994, the MCCS recruited 41,513 people aged 40-69 years. The first and second follow-ups were conducted in 1995-1998 and 2003-2007, respectively. We analyzed data from 39,185 participants. LCD score was calculated at baseline as the percentage of energy from carbohydrate, fat, and protein. The higher the score the less percentage of carbohydrates contributed to energy intake. The association of LCD quintiles with the incidence of diabetes was assessed using modified Poisson regression, adjusted for lifestyle, obesity, socioeconomic and other confounders. Mediation of the association by adiposity (BMI) was assessed. RESULTS LCD was positively associated with diabetes risk. Higher LCD score (p for trend = 0.001) was associated with increased risk of T2D. Quintile 5 (38 % energy from carbohydrates) versus quintile 1 (55 % energy from carbohydrates) showed a 20 % increased diabetes risk (incidence risk ratio (IRR) = 1.20 (95 % CI: 1.05-1.37)). A further adjustment for BMI (Body Mass Index) and WHR (Waist-to-Hip-Ratio) eliminated the association. Mediation analysis demonstrated that BMI mediated 76 % of the LCD & diabetes association. CONCLUSIONS Consuming a low carbohydrate diet, reflected as a high LCD score, may increase the risk of T2D which is largely explained by obesity. Results highlight the need for further studies, including clinical trials investigating the effects of a low carbohydrate diet in T2D.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this study were to update risk estimates of obesity related co-morbidities and to provide evidence of the importance of obesity prevention to decision makers. METHODS The study included 25- to 74-year-old participants (N=22,977) of the National FINRISK Studies in 1997, 2002 and 2007. Body mass index was calculated from measured weight and height at baseline. Data on morbidity were ascertained via linkage to the National Hospital Discharge Register, the Cancer Register and the records of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland until the end of year 2018. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate associations between weight status and the risk of the end-point diseases during follow-up, with adjustment for age and smoking. RESULTS At baseline, 31% of participants had at least one of the investigated diseases. Overweight, obesity and severe obesity were associated with type 2 diabetes, gout, gallbladder diseases and knee and hip osteoarthritis during the follow-up in both men and women. The risk of coronary heart disease was increased in men who were overweight, obese and severely obese and in women who were obese and severely obese. Risk of asthma was increased only among women who were obese and severely obese. No associations were found between obesity and breast, prostate or colorectal cancer. CONCLUSIONS The study showed a strong relationship between excess body weight and the prevalence and incidence of several diseases. Obesity prevention is essential to reduce disease burden in the future.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of systemic factors on macular vessel density in quantitative Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) by sex. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study. METHODS A total of 2018 adults were recruited in this study. Participants were excluded (n=964) due to missing data, eye-related problems, or low OCTA scan quality. Macular vessel densities were measured with OCTA using split-spectrum amplitude decorrelation angiography algorithm. Only the data from the right eyes were selected for analysis. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to determine the associations between macular vessel density and obesity-related systemic factors in each gender group. RESULTS The right eyes of 1054 participants (59.6% women) were enrolled. Men had significantly higher obesity parameters and associated risk factors. In multivariable linear regression analysis in men, older age and type 2 diabetes mellitus were independently associated with lower superficial retinal vessel density (β = -0.37, p = 0.002; β = -1.22, p = 0.03) and deep retinal vessel density, respectively (β = -0.66, p < 0.001; β = -1.76, p = 0.02); positive association was also observed between body mass index (BMI) and superficial retinal vessel density (β = 0.56, p = 0.02). In women, only higher systolic blood pressure was independently associated with a lower deep retinal vessel density (β = -0.50, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS This large cross-sectional study shows that older age and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with lower superficial and deep retinal capillary vessel density in men. This may help clinicians better understand how systemic factors influence retinal vessel density in different genders and future studies can ascertain more potential sex differences.

Abstract
Background Precision in evaluating underweight and overweight status among children and adolescents is paramount for averting health and developmental issues. Existing standards for these assessments have faced scrutiny regarding their validity. This study investigates the age and height dependencies within the international standards set by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), relying on body mass index (BMI), and contrasts them with Japanese standards utilizing the percentage of overweight (POW). Method We scrutinized a comprehensive database comprising 7,863,520 children aged 5-17 years, sourced from the School Health Statistics Research initiative conducted by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. Employing the quantile regression method, we dissected the structure of weight-for-height distributions across different ages and sexes, quantifying the potentially biased assessments of underweight and overweight status by conventional criteria. Results Applying IOFT criteria for underweight assessment revealed pronounced height dependence in males aged 11-13 and females aged 10-11. Notably, a discernible bias emerged, wherein children in the lower 25th percentile were classified as underweight five times more frequently than those in the upper 25th percentile. Similarly, the overweight assessment displayed robust height dependence in males aged 8-11 and females aged 7-10, with children in the lower 25th percentile for height deemed obese four or five times more frequently than their counterparts in the upper 25th percentile. Furthermore, using the Japanese POW criteria for assessment revealed significant age dependence in addition to considerably underestimating the percentage of underweight and overweight cases under the age of seven. However, the height dependence for the POW criterion was smaller than the BMI criterion, and the difference between height classes was less than 3-fold. Conclusion Our findings underscore the intricacies of age-dependent changes in body composition during the growth process in children, emphasizing the absence of gold standards for assessing underweight and overweight. Careful judgment is crucial in cases of short or tall stature at the same age, surpassing sole reliance on conventional criteria results.

Abstract
Sleep duration has been associated with overweight/obesity. Since sleep quality and body composition alter during aging, we conducted this study to determine if sleep quality is linked to body composition components in elderly people. This is a cross-sectional study conducted on 305 Iranian community-dwelling elderly aged ≥ 65 years. Sleep quality and body composition components were evaluated using Pittsburgh sleep quality index and bioelectric impedance analysis, respectively. The association of sleep quality and body composition components was examined using linear regression analysis. The prevalence of poor sleep quality and overweight/obesity was 48.9% and 54.4% in men and 77.0% and 79.3% in women, respectively. Women had significantly higher scores in most PSQI items than men, indicating their worse sleep quality compared to men. Women also had significantly higher body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and visceral adipose tissue and lower skeletal muscle and fat-free mass percentages than men. In the adjusted regression model, men showed positive associations between the third tertile of poor sleep quality and BMI (B = 1.35; 95% CI 0.08-2.61) and waist circumference (B = 4.14; 95% CI 0.39-7.89), but they did not demonstrate an association between sleep quality and body composition components. In the adjusted regression model for women, there were positive associations for BMI (B = 1.21; 95% CI 0.34-2.07), waist circumference (B = 2.95; 95% CI 0.99-4.91), body fat percentage (B = 2.75; 95% CI 1.06-4.45), and visceral adipose tissue (B = 7.80; 95% CI 1.73-13.87); also there were negative associations for skeletal muscle (B = - 1.40; 95% CI - 2.39 - - 0.41) and fat-free mass (B = - 2.76; 95% CI - 4.46 - -1.07) percentages. Except for waist circumference, other variables differed between men and women (P < 0.001). Weight management, prevention of muscle wasting, and improvement of sleep quality should be considered in a consortium when designing healthcare strategies for the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Vitamin D deficiency is a common nutritional problem worldwide that may have worsened during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The present study sought to examine the prevalence and correlates of vitamin D deficiency among healthcare workers three years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Participants comprised 2543 staff members from a medical research institute, who completed a questionnaire and donated blood samples in June 2023. 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels were measured using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio and its 95% confidence interval while adjusting for covariates. RESULTS The proportions of participants with vitamin D insufficiency (25[OH]D 20-29 ng/mL) and deficiency (25[OH]D < 20 ng/mL) were 44.9% and 45.9%, respectively. In a multivariable-adjusted model, factors associated with a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency included younger age, female sex, fewer hours of daytime outdoor physical activity during leisure time (without regular use of sunscreen), lower intake of fatty fish, no use of vitamin D supplements, smoking, and no alcohol consumption. Occupational factors, including shift work, were not independently associated with vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are highly prevalent among healthcare workers. Health education regarding lifestyle modifications for this occupational group are warranted to improve their vitamin D status in the COVID-19 era.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Child maltreatment (CM) is linked to obesity in adulthood. However, sex-differences and direct measurements of body fat have previously been insufficiently considered in this context. OBJECTIVE To assess sex-specific associations of CM with anthropometric markers of overweight/obesity and direct measures of body fat. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING Analyses were conducted in 4006 adults from a population-based cohort in Northeastern Germany (SHIP-TREND-0). METHODS CM was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Obesity-related traits included anthropometric indicators (i.e., height, weight, body mass index [BMI], waist [WC] and hip circumference [HC], waist-to-hip ratio [WHR], waist-to-height ratio [WHtR]), fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) ascertained using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Sex-stratified linear regression models predicting obesity-related traits from total CTQ scores were adjusted for age and education. Exploratory analyses investigated effects of CTQ subscales on obesity-related traits. RESULTS In men, CM was positively associated with WHtR (β = 0.04; p = .030) and VAT (β = 0.02; p = .031) and inversely with body height (β = -0.05; p = .010). In women, CM-exposure was positively associated with body weight (β = 0.07; p = .018), BMI (β = 0.03; p = .013), WC (β = 0.07; p = .005), HC (β = 0.05; p = .046), WHR (β = 0.03; p = .015), WHtR (β = 0.04; p = .006), FM (β = 0.04; p = .006), and SAT (β = 0.06; p = .041). In both sexes, effects were mainly driven by exposure to emotional and physical abuse. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that associations between CM-exposure and obesity-related traits in adulthood are primarily present in women. This may have implications for sex-specific obesity-related cardiometabolic risk after CM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Late-onset multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is the most common lipid storage myopathy. There are sex differences in fat metabolism and it is not known whether late-onset MADD affects men and women equally. METHODS In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, CBM, and Wanfang databases were searched until 01/08/2023. Studies reporting sex distribution in patients with late-onset MADD were included. Two authors independently screened studies for eligibility, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Pre-specified outcomes of interest were the male-to-female ratio (MFR) of patients with late-onset MADD, the differences of clinical characteristics between the sexes, and factors influencing the MFR. RESULTS Of 3379 identified studies, 34 met inclusion criteria, yielding a total of 609 late-onset MADD patients. The overall pooled percentage of males was 58% (95% CI, 54-63%) with low heterogeneity across studies (I2 = 2.99%; P = 0.42). The mean onset ages, diagnostic delay, serum creatine kinase (CK), and allelic frequencies of 3 hotspot variants in ETFDH gene were similar between male and female patients (P > 0.05). Meta-regressions revealed that ethnic group was associated with the MFR in late-onset MADD, and subgroup meta-analyses demonstrated that East-Asian patients had a higher percentage of male, lower CK, and higher proportion of hotspot variants in ETFDH gene than non-East-Asian patients (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Male patients with late-onset MADD were more common than female patients. Ethnicity was proved to be a factor influencing the MFR in late-onset MADD. These findings suggest that male sex may be a risk factor for the disease.

Abstract
Benzene is a commonly used industrial chemical that is a significant environmental pollutant. Occupational health specialists and industrial toxicologists are concerned with determining the exact amount of exposure to chemicals in the workplace. There are two main approaches to assess chemical exposure; air monitoring and biological monitoring. Air monitoring has limitations, which biological monitoring overcomes and could be used as a supplement to it. However, there are several factors that influence biological monitoring results. It would be possible to assess exposure more accurately if these factors were taken into account. This study aimed to review published papers for recognizing and discussing parameters that could affect benzene biological monitoring. Two types of effects can be distinguished: positive and negative effects. Factors causing positive effects will increase the metabolite concentration in urine more than expected. Furthermore, the parameters that decrease the urinary metabolite level were referred to as false negatives. From the papers, sixteen influential factors were extracted that might affect benzene biological monitoring results. Identified factors were clarified in terms of their nature and mechanism of action. It is also important to note that some factors influence the quantity and quality of the influence of other factors. As a result of this study, a decision-making protocol was developed for interpreting the final results of benzene biological monitoring.

Abstract
PURPOSE A higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with lower mortality in older patients following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for severe aortic valve stenosis. The current study aimed to investigate potential confounders of association between BMI and prognosis. METHODS The retrospective single-center study included consecutive patients following TAVR and excluded those in whom subcutaneous fat accumulation (SFA), visceral fat accumulation (VFA), and major psoas muscle (MPM) volume were not assessed by computed tomography. Cachexia was defined as a combination of BMI < 20 kg/m2 and any biochemical abnormalities. RESULTS After 2 patients were excluded, 234 (age, 86 ± 5 years; male, 77 [33%]; BMI, 22.4 ± 3.8 kg/m2; SFA, 109 (54-156) cm2; VFA, 71 (35-115) cm2; MPM, 202 (161-267) cm3; cachexia, 49 [21%]) were evaluated. SFA and VFA were strongly correlated with BMI (ρ = 0.734 and ρ = 0.712, respectively), whereas MPM was weakly correlated (ρ = 0.346). Two-year all-cause mortality was observed in 31 patients (13%). Higher BMI was associated with lower mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.77-0.95). A similar result was observed in the multivariate model including SFA (aHR in an increase of 20 cm2, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.77-0.98) instead of BMI, whereas VFA was not significant. Cachexia was a worse predictor (aHR, 2.51; 95% CI 1.11-5.65). CONCLUSIONS Association of higher BMI with lower mortality may be confounded by SFA in older patients following TAVR. Cachexia might reflect higher mortality in patients with lower BMI.

Abstract
Diet elicits varied effects on longevity across a wide range of animal species where dietary discordance between an organisms' evolutionary and developmental dietary history is increasingly recognized to play a critical role in shaping lifespan. However, whether such changes, predominantly assessed in a single generation, lead to evolutionary shifts in lifespan remains unclear. In this study, we used an experimental evolution approach to test whether changes in an organisms' evolutionary and developmental dietary history, specifically carbohydrate content, causes lifespan evolution in Drosophila serrata. After 30 generations, we investigated the evolutionary potential of lifespan in response to four novel diets that varied systematically in their ratio of carbohydrate-protein content. We also examined developmental plasticity effects using a set of control populations that were raised on the four novel environments allowing us to assess the extent to which plastic responses of lifespan mirrored adaptive responses observed following experimental evolution. Both high- and low-carbohydrate diets elicited plastic effects on lifespan; however, the plastic responses for lifespan to developmental diets bore little resemblance to the evolved responses on evolutionary diets. Understanding the dietary conditions regulating the match/mismatch of plastic and evolved responses will be important in determining whether a particular match/mismatch combination is adaptive for lifespan. While the differences in evolutionary diet by developmental diet interactions are only beginning to be elucidated, this study lays the foundation for future investigations of carbohydrate contributions to evolved and plastic effects on health and lifespan.

Abstract
Introduction Diabetes is closely linked to cardiovascular diseases, with diabetic dyslipidaemia serving as an established marker of the acceleration of complications, contributing to an increased cardiovascular risk among patients. Timely detection and early characterization of lipid abnormalities can help clinicians in implementing effective preventive measures. This study aimed to determine the patterns and associated factors of dyslipidaemia among Malaysian subjects with borderline diabetes. Methods A retrospective study was conducted among subjects with borderline diabetes aged ≥18 years who visited a primary healthcare centre at Universiti Sains Malaysia from January 2017 to December 2018. Sociodemographic, clinical and laboratory data were obtained from electronic medical records. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25. Results A total of 250 participants with borderline diabetes were included in the analysis. Of them, 93.6% (n=234) had lipid abnormalities. Isolated dyslipidaemia characterised by a high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level (38.8%, n=97) was the most common pattern found, followed by combined dyslipidaemia of high LDL-C and triglyceride (TG) levels (22.8%, n=57). The male sex was found to be significantly associated with hypertriglyceridemia (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.86, 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.09-3.1)(P=0.02). Diastolic blood pressure ≥90mmHg was significantly associated with a low HDL-C level (A0R=2.09, 95% CI=1.0-4.1) (P=0.03). Conclusion The majority of subjects with borderline diabetes have lipid abnormalities. Specifically, isolated dyslipidaemia characterised by a high LDL-C level is alarmingly prevalent. Further large-scale robust studies are needed to confirm the present findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Both low handgrip strength (HGS) and abdominal obesity (AO) are associated with cognitive impairment. However, it remains unclear whether low HGS and AO interact to affect cognition, and whether the synergistic effect varies by gender. This study aimed to examine whether the association between low HGS and incident cognitive impairment was moderated by AO among Chinese older men and women. METHODS We used the data of participants (≥60 years) from four waves (2011-2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. We defined low HGS as the maximal HGS of <28 kg in men and <18 kg in women, and AO as waist circumference of ≥90 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women. Cognitive impairment was defined as a global cognitive score in the lowest 10th percentile. For each gender, we used subdistribution hazards model to estimate subdistribution hazard ratios (SHRs) for the association of low HGS and AO with incident cognitive impairment, treating mortality as the competing event and controlling for other covariates. Multiplicative interaction was assessed through a cross-product interaction term of low HGS and AO in the model. Additive interaction between low HGS and AO was evaluated by calculating the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and attributable proportion due to interaction (AP). RESULTS We included 3704 participants (Mean age: 66.9 ± 5.81; 54.9% male). During the 7-year follow-up, 1133 events of interest occurred (731 cognitive impairments and 402 deaths). Incidence rates of cognitive impairment and mortality were 4.1 (95% CI: 3.8 to 4.4) and 2.2 (95% CI: 2.0 to 2.5) per 100 person-years. There were positive multiplicative (SHR for the product term = 1.974, 95% CI: 1.114 to 3.500) and additive interactions (RERI = 1.056, 95% CI: 0.027 to 2.086, AP = 0.454, 95% CI: 0.158 to 0.750) of low HGS and AO on the risk of cognitive impairment among older men. Male participants with both low HGS and AO showed an increased risk of cognitive impairment (SHR = 2.325, 95% CI: 1.498 to 3.609) compared with those without either. There was no evidence of interaction among older women (SHR for the product term = 1.151, 95% CI: 0.725 to 1.825; RERI = 0.044, 95% CI: -0.524 to 0.613; AP = 0.039, 95% CI: -0.458 to 0.536). CONCLUSIONS Low HGS and AO may interact to synergistically increase the risk of cognitive impairment among Chinese older men. Screening the highest-risk subpopulation, who may benefit most from neurocognitive prevention strategies, may maximize potential public health gains.

Abstract
CONTEXT Independently of the total body fat mass, upper body fat mass deposition is strongly associated with cardiometabolic comorbidities. The mechanisms underlying fat mass localisation are not fully understood, but evidences indicate sex-specific fat mass distribution. Currently, data on women are scarce and the link between hormonal status changes during their life and fat mass distribution is overlooked. METHOD For this narrative review, literature data were extracted from the PubMed and CENTRAL databases to examine the relationship between hormonal status and adipose tissue localisation in women. RESULTS Menopause strongly influences fat mass localisation, while the effect of the menstrual cycle phases, oral contraception use and pregnancy has not been unambiguously determined. CONCLUSION Reliable data are lacking on the relationship between hormonal variations throughout the lifespan and body fat mass localisation in women. Future studies should take into account the hormonal status of women to reduce the risk of cardiometabolic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of obesity, hypertension and diabetes is increasing. Hypertension and diabetes are common complications. Additionally, obesity and hypertension-diabetes comorbidity (HDC) are both closely related to insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the association of obesity indicators with HDC in elderly individuals. METHODS This retrospective cohort study included 74,955 subjects aged ≥ 60 years living in Xinzheng, Henan Province, from January 2011 to December 2019. The data were collected from the annual health examination dataset. Cox proportional hazard regression models and competing-risk survival regression models were used to examine the relationships between the three indicators and HDC risk. RESULTS After 346,504 person-years of follow-up, HDC developed in 9,647 subjects. After further adjustments for confounders and death competing risks, compared with a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5-23.9 kg/m2, the fully adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of BMI < 18.5, 24-27.9 and ≥ 28 kg/m2 for HDC morbidity were 0.651(0.538,0.788),1.00,1.396(1.336,1.459) and 1.769(1.666,1.878), respectively. Moreover, participants with abdominal obesity measured via waist circumference (WC) or waist-to-height ratio (WtHR) had a higher risk of HDC (HR:1.513; 95% CI: 1.45,1.578 and HR:1.412;95% CI: 1.353,1.473), respectively, than participants with low WC or with low WtHR. In the joint analyses, the highest risk was observed in participants who were overweight and who had central obesity (HR: 1.721; 95% CI: 1.635, 1.811) compared with the nonoverweight and noncentral obesity groups. CONCLUSIONS Increased BMI, WC and WtHR were associated with an increased risk of HDC. There was an additive interaction between general body adiposity (as measured via BMI) and central obesity (as measured via WC and WtHR) for HDC. Therefore, reasonable control of BMI, WC and WtHR may be an effective measure to prevent HDC among elderly individuals.

Abstract
Background Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are two global public health problems. Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 analogue (GLP-1), is considered an effective option for weight loss. Hence, it is meaningful to understand the impact of GLP-1 therapy on body composition, particularly fat mass percentage (%), in determining health risks associated with obesity. The current meta-analysis and systematic review aimed to appraise and summarize available studies regarding the efficacy of liraglutide on fat mass (%), anthropometrics and glycemic control. Methods Three databases were searched up to March 2022 for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and studies that evaluated the efficacy of liraglutide on T2DM patients: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and PUBMED: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and PUBMED. If at least two studies had the same outcome and treatment, a random effect model meta-analysis was used to report pooled mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The protocol of this review was registered in PROSPERO under registration number CRD42022313002. Results From the 4031 articles identified and reviewed, only 5 studies (N = 263 patients) matched the inclusion criteria. Only two out of 3 RCTs have complete data to produce forest plots. No significant changes were observed from the pooled MD for body fat % [-0.56 (-2.63, 1.26)] and weight [-0.68 (-2.63, 1.26)]. A significant change in Hba1c with a pooled MD of -1.25 (-2.13, -0.36) (p = 0.006) was observed. I2 tests were above the threshold of 50% for weight and Hba1c, indicating heterogeneity among the included studies. Conclusion This review suggests that liraglutide is effective in glycemic control with no significant effect on weight and fat mass % among overweight patients with T2DM. It is important to note, however, that the certainty of the available evidence is weak.

Abstract
Body weight and fatness appear to be regulated phenomena. Several different theoretical models are available to capture the essence of this idea. These include the set-point, dynamic equilibrium, adiposity force, control theory-settling point, Hall-Guo, operation point and dual intervention point (DIP) models. The set-point model posits a single reference point around which levels of fat are regulated. The dynamic equilibrium model suggests that the apparent regulation of body fat around a reference point is an illusion owing to the necessary impacts of weight change on energy expenditure. Control theory focuses on the importance of feedback gain and suggests set-point and dynamic equilibrium are ends of a continuum of feedback gain. Control theory models have also been called 'settling point' models. The Hall-Guo, operation point and DIP models also bring together the set-point and dynamic equilibrium ideas into a single framework. The DIP proposes a zone of indifference where dynamic equilibrium 'regulation' predominates, bounded by upper and lower intervention points beyond which physiological mechanisms are activated. The drifty gene hypothesis is an idea explaining where this individual variation in the upper intervention point might come from. We conclude that further experiments to test between the models are sorely required. Abstract
Aim/Introduction The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of early antidiabetic therapy in reversing metabolic changes caused by high-fat and high-sucrose diet (HFHSD) in both sexes. Methods Elderly Sprague-Dawley rats, 45 weeks old, were randomized into four groups: a control group fed on the standard diet (STD), one group fed the HFHSD, and two groups fed the HFHSD along with long-term treatment of either metformin (HFHSD+M) or liraglutide (HFHSD+L). Antidiabetic treatment started 5 weeks after the introduction of the diet and lasted 13 weeks until the animals were 64 weeks old. Results Unexpectedly, HFHSD-fed animals did not gain weight but underwent significant metabolic changes. Both antidiabetic treatments produced sex-specific effects, but neither prevented the onset of prediabetes nor diabetes. Conclusion Liraglutide vested benefits to liver and skeletal muscle tissue in males but induced signs of insulin resistance in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 3D laser-based photonic scanners are increasingly used in health studies to estimate body composition. However, too little is known about whether various 3D body scan measures estimate body composition better than single standard anthropometric measures, and which body scans best estimate it. Furthermore, little is known about differences by sex and age. METHODS 105 men and 96 women aged between 18 and 90 years were analysed. Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis was used to estimate whole relative fat mass (RFM), visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). An Anthroscan VITUSbodyscan was used to obtain 3D body scans (e.g. volumes, circumferences, lengths). To reduce the number of possible predictors that could predict RFM, VAT and SMI backward elimination was performed. With these selected predictors linear regression on the respective body compositions was performed and the explained variations were compared with models using standard anthropometric measurements (Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-height-ratio (WHtR)). RESULTS Among the models based on standard anthropometric measures, WC performed better than BMI and WHtR in estimating body composition in men and women. The explained variations in models including body scan variables are consistently higher than those from standard anthropometrics models, with an increase in explained variations between 5% (RFM for men) and 10% (SMI for men). Furthermore, the explained variation of body composition was additionally increased when age and lifestyle variables were added. For each of the body composition variables, the number of predictors differed between men and women, but included mostly volumes and circumferences in the central waist/chest/hip area and the thighs. CONCLUSIONS 3D scan models performed better than standard anthropometric measures models to predict body composition. Therefore, it is an advantage for larger health studies to look at body composition more holistically using 3D full body surface scans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex differences in the longitudinal relationship between dynapenic abdominal obesity, i.e., impairment in muscle strength and high waist circumference, and disability in activities of daily living have not been investigated to date. Therefore, we aimed to examine sex differences in the longitudinal association between dynapenic abdominal obesity at baseline and the onset of disability in activities of daily living during a four-year follow-up period among Irish adults aged ≥50 years. METHODS Data from Wave 1 (2009-2011) and Wave 3 (2014-2015) of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing survey were analyzed. Dynapenia was defined as handgrip strength of <26 kg for men and <16 kg for women. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference of >88 cm for women and >102 cm for men. Dynapenic abdominal obesity was defined as having both dynapenia and abdominal obesity. Disability was defined as having difficulty with at least one of six activities of daily living (dressing, walking, bathing, eating, getting in or out of bed, using the toilet). Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to assess associations. RESULTS Data on 4471 individuals aged ≥50 years and free of disability at baseline were analyzed [mean (SD) age 62.3 (8.6) years; 48.3 % males]. In the overall sample, compared to no dynapenia and no abdominal obesity, dynapenic abdominal obesity was associated with 2.15 (95%CI = 1.17-3.93) times higher odds for incident disability at 4-year follow-up. This association was significant among men (OR = 3.78; 95%CI = 1.70-8.38) but not among women (OR = 1.34; 95%CI = 0.60-2.98). CONCLUSIONS Interventions to prevent or address dynapenic abdominal obesity may aid in the prevention of disability, especially among men.

Abstract
Background Body mass index (BMI) is an important indicator of overweight and obesity. Unlike BMI, body fat percentage (BF%) can be utilized to estimate body composition regardless of weight and height. The association between BMI and BF%, as well as the impact of age and gender, may help estimate the prevalence of obesity more clearly. This study aimed to assess the relationship between BMI and BF%, examine the effect of age and gender on this relationship, and establish the linearity/curvilinearity of this relationship. Methodology The body composition analysis of 1,150 participants in various institutional events (institution foundation day) during 2019 and 2023 was performed using the Accuniq bio-electrical impedance analyzer (BIA) (Accuniq, Netherlands). The participants included undergraduate, postgraduate medical, and PhD students, as well as employees of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Age groups were categorized as under 17 years, young adults (18-25 years), adults (26-44 years), middle-aged adults (45-59 years), and older adults (≥60 years). Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was used for analyzing the relationship between BMI and BF%. To assess the effect of age and gender on this relationship, multiple regression analysis was applied, and polynomial regression was applied to test its linearity. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Males made up a larger proportion of the participants (56.3%; 647). The mean age of the participants was 36.5 ± 13.6 years. The mean BMI and BF% were 24.7 ± 4.0 kg/m2 and 29.1 ± 8.7%, respectively. A significant and moderate positive correlation (r = 0.630, p < 0.01) was observed between BMI and BF%. The mean ± SD of BMI and BF% had a directly proportional relationship with age. Among both genders, females showed a greater correlation (r = 0.852). Both age and gender had a significant effect on this relationship, with gender impacting more than age (β = 0.488, p < 0.000). The curvilinear nature of the relationship between BMI and BF% was demonstrated with the female model showing a more precise fit (R2 = 0.72, standard error of the estimate = 3.3%). Conclusions The relationship between BMI and BF% was significant and positive in this group of Indians. This relationship was significantly impacted by age and gender and was curvilinear in nature. Females had a higher association than males between BMI and BF%. The study suggests that BMI, BF%, and the effects of age and gender should be taken into consideration when predicting obesity.

J Strength Cond Res 37(10): 2076-2079, 2023-The U.S. Army recently replaced the leg tuck with the plank in their physical ability testing. There has been limited analysis of whether these 2 tests correlate, have any relationships with body composition and strength, or are sex-neutral. Forty-nine civilian college students (28 males, 21 females) were recruited as surrogates for tactical personnel. The following were measured: height, body mass, body fat percentage (BF%), and muscle mass percentage (MM%) measured through bioelectrical impedance analysis, grip strength, leg tuck, and plank. Independent t -tests were calculated to determine between-sex differences for all variables ( p < 0.05). Partial correlations controlling for sex were used to compute relationships between the leg tuck, plank, and other variables. Stepwise regression controlling for sex derived predictive relationships for the leg tuck and plank. Males were taller, had greater body mass, MM%, and were superior in grip strength and the leg tuck; females had greater BF%. There were no significant between-sex differences for the plank. The leg tuck correlated with BF%, MM%, grip strength, and the plank ( r = ±0.333-0.524). In addition to the leg tuck, the plank correlated with BF% ( r = -0.288). The leg tuck was predicted by sex, grip strength, and the plank (adjusted r2 = 0.662). No variables predicted the plank. As there were no between-sex differences and sex was not a plank predictor, it appears this test minimized sex differences on task performance in civilians. However, the leg tuck and plank likely measure different qualities; further research is needed on job task relationships.
