Professor Wael M Abdel-Rahman (Hassan); PhD in Molecular Pathology; is Professor and the chairperson of the Medical Lab Sciences Dept., at the University of Sharjah, U.A.E. As a University Professor, he excels in teaching, research and community services. He applies modern teaching methodologies including research-oriented teaching both at the levels of BSc, and MSc. Professor Abel-Rahman is an active researcher and the founding coordinator of the “Cancer Research Group” at the University of Sharjah which supports the research of many colleagues and students. For the last two years, Professor Abdel-Rahman has been acting as the chair of a big academic department and he raised the rank of this Department at multiple fronts including obtaining international accreditation (AHPGS). Professor Abdel-Rahman published around 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles and critical reviews on the genetics of colorectal, breast, endometrial and other cancers in leading international journals. He contributed presentations and posters to more than 60 conferences. He has an H Index: 33, total citations: 3520 as of June 2024. He has received more than 10 awards and 50 grants including many international grants such as from the Academy of Finland and European Commission. His PhD work was carried out at Edinburgh and Cambridge Universities, UK (1997-2001), with a focus on molecular genetics of colorectal cancer, during which he identified a novel molecular cytogenetic profile in colorectal cancers. At the Department of Medical Genetics, University of Helsinki, Finland (2002-2007) he directed his efforts to the study and diagnosis of familial cancers and contributed to seminal discoveries in this field. He served as a chair or member of postgraduate programs, research committees, and an editorial board member of high impact scientific journals, and conferences. He revised more than 200 articles and wrote more than 20 letters, critical reviews and editorials for scientific journals. Additional he wrote many pieces/articles in public newspapers and scientific magazines both printed and online. Professor Abdel-Rahman long-term research aims at dissecting and understanding how the impact of the environment on cancer development and progression. Many of current research projects at the University of Sharjah aims to understand the causes and mechanisms of cancer development in the region, the resistance of cancer cells to therapy, and the role of environmental pollutants and obesity in carcinogenesis. Professor Abdel-Rahman is a well-established and distinguished researcher, educator, mentor and students’ supervisor. His contributions in his field of specialization is highly appreciated as evident by the number of grants and awards he has received. Professor Abdel-Rahman enjoys sports especially basketball and gardening.
