Several soluble factors have been identified to play a major role in immunosuppressive effects of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) including prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), transforming growth factor (TGF-β), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), interleukin-10 (IL-10), nitric oxide, IL-6 and HLA-G. Moreover, cytokines (e.g. IFN-γ), chemokines and Toll-like receptors (TLR) ligands have been shown to modulate/activate immune suppression by MSC.
