While the oxygen deprivation due to ischemia depletes cell energy, subsequent reoxygenation due to reperfusion induces many cascades, from production of reactive oxygen species to initiation of apoptosis. UPS: Ubiquitin-proteasome system; mPTP: mitochondrial permeability transition pore.
