Abstract
Gastrointestinal ultrasound is a practical, safe, cheap and reproducible diagnostic tool in inflammatory bowel disease gaining global prominence amongst clinicians. Understanding the embryological processes of the intestinal tract assists in the interpretation of abnormal sonographic findings. In general terms, the examination principally comprises interrogation of the colon, mesentery and small intestine using both low-frequency and high-frequency probes. Interpretation of findings on GIUS includes assessment of bowel wall thickness, symmetry of this thickness, evidence of transmural changes, assessment of vascularity using Doppler imaging and assessment of other specific features including lymph nodes, mesentery and luminal motility. In addition to B-mode imaging, transperineal ultrasonography, elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography are useful adjuncts. This supplement expands upon these features in more depth.

Abstract
AIM The Ultrasound Meal Accommodation Test (UMAT) is a clinical test used to assess gastric accommodation, gastric emptying, and visceral sensitivity. It has been used as a clinical tool at Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen for more than 20 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS Five-hundred and nine patients were retrospectively evaluated, 71% females, and 51% were referred from other hospitals or specialists. The aim was to explore the usefulness of UMAT in patients with suspected functional GI disorders (FGID). RESULTS One hundred and sixty patients were diagnosed with functional dyspepsia (FD), and 154 patients were diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The overlap between IBS and FD was 41%. In 36% of FD patients, ultrasound assessment showed impaired gastric accommodation. Of 262 patients filling out all required fields for the FD diagnosis (ROMA II and III), 198 (74%) met the criteria for FD, but only 91 (34%) were later diagnosed with FD by an experienced clinician. CONCLUSIONS By combining ultrasonography, the symptom response to a standardized meal, and psychological assessment, the UMAT is useful in diagnosis and management of patients with FGID.

Abstract
Ultrasound has been established as a routine work-up imaging method in abdominal diseases. It assesses the morphology of intra-abdominal organs and depicts the normal and pathological anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract as well as of the biliopancreatic system. Ultrasound is the method of choice for visualisation of motion sequences since it is, in contrast to other imaging methods, a real-time method. The non-invasiveness and the repeatability of the method are important advantages when performing investigations of functional processes. Therefore, ultrasound is most suited for functional studies. Up to now, functional ultrasound and its potential have been undervalued. Functional ultrasound provides a widely available method to increase our understanding of functional processes and motility. The authors review the options of functional ultrasound and discuss its practical relevance.

Abstract
Function tests in gastroenterology and hepatology aim to provide criteria for diagnosis of specific disorders and for prediction of patient responses to therapy. This review focuses on the utility of function tests in the management of gallstone disease and functional biliary disorders. In gallstone disease, function tests may be considered in the selection of candidates for nonsurgical therapy of gallbladder stones only. In cases of suspected functional biliary disorders, experts have advocated the use of classical noninvasive tests such as hepatobiliary scintigraphy. However, unequivocal evidence for their utility in diagnosis or patient selection for invasive treatment is yet to be provided. Recently, more advanced noninvasive tests such as real-time ultrasonography or secretin-stimulated magnetic resonance cholangiopancreaticography have been described. Controlled trials using these novel techniques may provide a rationale for the use of function tests in clinical management of calculous and acalculous biliary diseases, but are currently not available.
