This study aimed to describe and test a program implemented by a nurse for cancer patients in the postoperative period of abdominal surgery using Wii Fit games. It explored the relationship between the type of game, its duration, and the score obtained with variables such as quality of life, fatigue, balance, anxiety, and depression.

A quasi-experimental project was conducted using a one-group pretest-posttest design to assess the effects of a rehabilitation program utilizing Nintendo Wii Fit. The games included were Wii Fit Aerobics - Basic Step, Wii Fit - Balance Games Penguin Slide, Wii Fit Training Plus - Birds Eye Bulls Eye, and Wii Fit - Hula Hoop. Data were collected 48h post-surgery and on the 7th day post-surgery.

Thirty-five patients participated in the study. The evaluation revealed that the scores and durations of the games had significantly related to the outcomes on the scales, with the "Wii Fit Aerobics - Basic Step" and "Wii Fit - Hula Hoop" games having the most significant impact across multiple aspects.

The study demonstrated that the rehabilitation program had a positive effect on the study population, administered by a rehabilitation nurse. The use of exergames may offer a viable solution to the challenges of traditional rehabilitation methods, particularly for cancer patients in the postoperative period.

Although the 2021 Chinese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) provide recommendations for ERAS in gastrointestinal surgery, the clinical application of standard ERAS nursing models is challenging due to the variety of diseases involved in gastrointestinal surgery and the complex factors contributing to patient stress responses. Moreover, stress responses are more severe in older adult patients. Therefore, precision medicine is required to improve the quality of nursing care and promote postoperative recovery in gastrointestinal surgery.

To establish an evidence-based ERAS model based on stress response nursing care and demonstrate nursing benefits through clinical practice.

This randomized clinical trial first established an evidence-based nursing ERAS protocol in older adult patients based on literature related to perioperative nursing measures for gastrointestinal surgery stress response. Next, 392 older adult patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery and were admitted to our hospital between December 2021 and June 2023 were categorized into two groups to receive evidence-based (study group) or conventional (control group) ERAS nursing models, respectively. Intraoperative physiological parameters during surgery and postoperative recovery indicators were compared between the groups.

Among 64 domestic and international studies, the stress responses of older adult patients mainly included emotional anxiety, sleep disorders, gastrointestinal discomfort, physical weakness, pain, and swelling. The appropriate nursing interventions included comprehensive psychological counseling, pre- and postoperative nutritional support, temperature control, pain management, and rehabilitation training. Compared with the control group, the study group showed lower heart rate, mean arterial pressure, blood glucose level, and adrenaline level; shorter duration of drainage tube placement, time to first flatus, time to first ambulation, and postoperative hospital stay; lower anxiety scores on postoperative day 3; and lower incidences of postoperative infection, obstruction, poor wound healing, and gastrointestinal reactions were lower in the study group (all P < 0.05).

The evidence-based nursing measures targeting stress responses based on the conventional ERAS nursing model resulted in stable intraoperative physiological parameters during surgery, promoted postoperative recovery, and reduced the incidence of complications.

Exergames, which combine digital games and physical exercise, have become increasingly popular for rehabilitation in the health domain. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of exergame rehabilitation on the quality of life of cancer patients undergoing abdominal surgery.

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of exergame rehabilitation on the quality of life of cancer patients who had undergone abdominal surgery. Seventy postoperative patients were included, and data collection took place between January 2023 and May 2023. The patients were randomly assigned to either an exergame rehabilitation program (n = 35) or a traditional rehabilitation program (n = 35). The assessed outcome was the quality of life, and data collection occurred at three different time points: upon admission, 48 h postoperatively, and on the 7th day after surgery.

Quality of life was evaluated using the WHOQOL-BREF Scale. At the third assessment, a statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups (p = 0.016), indicating that the intervention group had a higher quality of life than the control group.

The study showed a positive effect of exergames on the population under investigation. By the 7th day after surgery, the intervention group demonstrated an improvement in their quality of life compared to the control group.

A refined nursing process is utilized to formulate a detailed early postsurgical activity plan. The postsurgical activity aims to conduct focused and planned interventions to address the early postoperative activities of patients, enhance the awareness and compliance of the patients through the early postsurgical activities. Currently, in traditional clinical practice, there is no clear evidence showing the effect of initial postsurgical actions related to the rehabilitation of inpatients undertaking abdominal operations. The present study will systematically evaluate how initial postsurgical actions impact the rehabilitation of patients undertaking abdominal operation through the analysis of relevant domestic and foreign literature.

Analyze the how initial postsurgical actions impact the rehabilitation of abdominal surgery inpatients.

The present systematic study will retrieve randomized controlled trials and case-control studies from online databases. The retrieved studies will describe the initial postsurgical activities in inpatients undergoing abdominal surgery. Accordingly, the following databases are searched for the aforementioned types of studies: Cochrane library, China National of Knowledge Infrastructure, Web of Science, PubMed database, WanFang database, and Embase database. Studies from inception to August 19, 2021 will be searched. The quality evaluation and data extraction for the studies that will satisfy the inclusion criteria will be conducted by 2 independent researchers. A meta-analysis on the postoperative indicators will be performed using RevMan 5.3.5 software.

Postoperative complications after abdominal surgery are high, and there is no reliable intervention program to prevent them. Some studies have pointed out that early postoperative activities have advantages in preventing the occurrence of complications, but lack of evidence-based basis. The purpose of this study is to systematically evaluate the effect of nursing intervention is guiding early postoperative activities on the rapid recovery of patients undergoing abdominal surgery.

China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database and Chinese Biomedical Database, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library will be searched by computer, and a randomized controlled study is conducted on early participation in exercise programs after abdominal surgery from the establishment of the database to January 2021. The language is limited to English and Chinese. The quality of the included study is independently extracted and the literature quality is evaluated by 2 researchers, and the included literature is analyzed by Meta using RevMan5.3 software.

This study will evaluate the effect of nursing intervention is guiding early postoperative activities on the rapid rehabilitation of patients undergoing abdominal surgery through the indexes of postoperative quality of life score, the incidence of complications, mortality, length of stay and so on.

This study will provide reliable evidence-based basis for establishing a reasonable and effective postoperative activity guidance program for patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
