Figure 1 Schematic of the rabies virus genome. Coding regions are shown as cylinders and intergenic regions are shown as single lines. The genome consists of the nucleoprotein (N), phosphoprotein (P), matrix (M), glycoprotein (G) and RNA dependent RNA polymerase (L). Attenuation of RABV has been achieved through the addition of point mutations within the G protein, specifically at amino acid position 333 in the SAG2 vaccine strain. Virus attenuation has also been achieved through inclusion of multiple copies of the G protein or by addition of mammalian immunity genes[41]. RABV: Rabies virus.
