Figure 1 Diagrammatic illustration of the role the gut microbiota plays in the onset of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The gut-liver axis components are operating normally in the left panel. In the right panel, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is shown. The translocation of certain bacterial products into the portal vein is facilitated by the dysbiotic microbiota and the altered intestinal barrier brought on by tight junction dysfunction. These bacterial products cause inflammation and the development of NAFLD by interacting with toll-like receptors on the surface of the liver cells.
