Dr. Nikolaos Giannakeas was born in Athens, Greece, in 1980. In 1999, he started his studies in the Department of Physics, School of Sciences, University of Ioannina, where he graduated in July 2003. After completing his degree, he started his PhD research in the Medical School at University of Ioannina. The subject of the Thesis, which he supported in 2011, was "Microarray Image Processing using Intelligent Information Systems". He has worked for more than 12 years in research projects funded by National and European funds (3rd CSF, FP6, FP7, Horizon 2020). His research contribution to these projects was related to the fields of image and signal processing, computer vision, data mining, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, as well as decision support systems, focusing on bioinformatics, bio-technology and biomedical engineering. He has great experience in biomedical imaging and especially in Neuroimaging and histopathological image processing. Since 2009 he has been working on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, establishing the Q base R&D spin off company, which is based in the Science and Technology Park of Epirus. From 2013 until July 2015 he was Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Computer Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Epirus. The period between October 2015 to November 2019 he worked as postdoc researcher and Academic Scholar in this institute. In April 2017, he began a collaboration with the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) of the Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). Currently, he is an Assistant Professor (November 2019) in the Informatics and Telecommunications Department, at Universityat University of Ioannina. He has published more than 90 articles in scientific journals, international conference proceedings and scientific books chapters.
