Inclusion criteria |
< 75 yr of age |
Undetectable C-peptide levels (< 0.1 ng/mL) |
Duration of type 1 diabetes mellitus for > 5 yr accompanied by recurrent neuroglycopenia |
Reduced awareness of hypoglycemic episodes and/or severe glycemic lability despite intensive insulin therapy and glycemic monitoring |
Exclusion criteria |
Presence of uncorrectable coronary disease |
A body mass index of > 25 kg/m2 |
Inadequate renal reserve defined as serum creatinine level of > 1.5 mg/dL, creatinine clearance of < 80 mL/min per 1.73 m2 of body surface area, or a urinary albumin level of > 300 mg/24 h |
Negative serological findings for Epstein-Barr virus at the time of assessment |
