Obtained MD at National University of Córdoba (Argentina) in 1986, and received PhD at Autonomous University of Madrid (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, UAM), Spain in 1991. His Thesis work was mainly focused on the purification and characterization of Dictyostelium discoideum phosphofructokinase. Joined the Department of Microbial Biotechnology, Spanish National Centre for Biotechnology (Centro Nacional de Biotecnología -CNB-, CSIC) in 1992 as postdoctoral fellow, being involved in a research project addressing the control mechanisms of secondary metabolism in Streptomyces. In 2000, he moved to the Medical School of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) as research assistant in the department of Biochemistry, which forms part of a Joint Center between UAM and the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols (IIBM, CSIC). He was designed assistant professor in 2001, and was then promoted to associate professor in 2005. He served as chairman of the Enzymology and Molecular Pathology Unit of IIBM during 2006-2007. In 2001 and 2004, as part of a collaborative project, he carried out several short research stays in the laboratory of Dr. Keith Tornheim at the Department of Biochemistry of the Boston University Medical School. His research topic is mainly centered in the molecular bases of enzyme regulation as well as the control mechanisms underlying metabolic gene expression. He has also been co-investigator in two clinical trials (phase I and Ib) and in the clinical trial IIb-III, directed toward the development of a new drug for the non-invasive diagnosis of lactose intolerance. He is reviewer of several international journals. He has supervised the research work of PhD, MSc and undergraduate students. He is member of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
