Dr. Giuliano Bernal earned his B.S. in Biochemistry at Universidad Austral de Chile, and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the Universidad de Chile, doing research about the role of the complexes remodelers of chromatin in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. He completed post-doctoral training at Universidad Católica del Norte, in molecular biology and he was interested in cancer. In this University, Dr. Bernal obtained the position of Associate Professor in 2009 and one year later founded the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Cancer. In the Universidad Católica del Norte, Dr. Bernal obtained the positions of Chief of the Bachelor’s Program (2010-2013), Chief of the Department of Biomedical Sciences (2013-2015), and President of the Ethical Committee (2014 - 2019). Currently is full Professor in the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Católica del Norte. The Bernal´s Lab is dedicated to the study of diagnostic and treatment of gastric cancer, obtaining the support of several grants for these purposes. Currently the Bernal’s Lab have a grant for the development of new drugs based on ruthenium for the treatment of gastric cancer and other types of digestive cancers, and other grant in which they hope to develop a molecular method for to determine the antibiotic resistance of H. pylori in fecal samples of infected patients.
