Erik AC Wiemer is a staff member of the Department of Medical Oncology, Erasmus University Medical Center. He currently holds the position of associate professor. Erik was trained as a biochemist / molecular biologist and obtained his Ph.D. at the at the University of Amsterdam. For 6 years he worked as postdoctoral fellow at the Christian de Duve Institute of Cellular and Molecular Pathology of the Université Catholique de Louvain in Brussels and at the department of Biology of the University of California at San Diego. Upon returning to the Netherlands joined the department of Hematology of the Erasmus Medical Center where he investigated drug resistance in hematological malignancies. In 2002 he moved to the department of Medical Oncology. 1) The tumor biology of soft-tissue sarcomas particularly the role of microRNAs / non-protein coding RNAs and their use as biomarkers and therapeutic agents. 2) The generation and use of (cancer-derived) induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) in basic and translational cancer research. 3) The activity and function of signaling pathways such as Wnt/ẞ-catenin signaling in soft tissue sarcomas and the Nrf2-Keap1 pathway in lung cancer.
