Professor Islam has completed his BSc (hons) and MSc degrees in Biochemistry (University of Dhaka, Bangladesh) and PhD in Nutritional Science from the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University, Japan in September 2004. Subsequently, he has completed two consecutive Postdoctoral Fellowships from the Seoul National University, South Korea and North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa during 2005-2006 and 2006-2008, respectively. Very recently, he spent a considerable amount of time as a “Visiting Research Fellow” at the Department of Biochemistry and Stem Cell Research, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, India and as a “Visiting Associate Professor” at St. Claraspital Hospital, Basel, Switzerland. Currently, he is serving as an “Full Professor of Biochemistry” and Head of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology disciplines under the School of Life Sciences; College of Agriculture, Engineering and Sciences of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. He has also served as a Member followed by Chair of the School of Life Sciences Research & Higher Degree Committee and Animal Research Ethics Committee of the University of KwaZulu-Natal for a considerable years. He achieved “Distinguished Teacher Award 2015” and “Top30 Researcher Award 2017, 2019 and 2021” from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. He also achieved a number of awards from International Endocrine Society, Korean Endocrine Society, Japan Diabetes Society, Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition, Pacific Science Association, International Diabetes Federation and many others in the previous years. His research focuses the development of novel non-genetic animal model of type 2 diabetes and obesity and investigating the antidiabetic and anti-obesogenic potentials and underlying mechanisms of various antidiabetic and anti-obesogenic drugs, medicinal and functional foods, sugar substitutes and artificial sweeteners, medicinal plant extracts, fractions and their isolated pure compounds targeting novel drug discovery. He has been rated as a committed young researcher by the National Research Foundation (NRF), South Africa and I am currently holding C1 rating from NRF, South Africa. Additionally, he has been also serving as a regular reviewer of more than 20 international peer reviewed journals in the field of my expertise and working as a Member of the Editorial Board of 5 international journals such as Frontiers in Pharmacology and Drug Discovery (Switzerland), Food and Nutrition Report (England), Journal of Biochemical and Pharmacological Research (USA), Recent Patents in Food, Nutrition and Agriculture (UAE); and Guest Editor of Frontiers in Chemistry, Switzerland and served as a Lead Guest Editor of two international peer reviewed journals (Molecules and Journal of Diabetes Research) and Member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Diabetes (China) . So far he has published 13 peer reviewed book chapters, more than 200 research articles in the international peer reviewed journals including 11 reviews and two editorials since 2004. He has also supervised the research projects of 3 Postdoctoral Fellows, 10 PhD, 11 MSc and 23 Honors level students and currently supervising the research projects of 5 PhD, 5 Masters and 2 Honours level students.
