Zeno Spârchez, MD, PhD, graduated in 1990 the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca, following specialization in internal medicine (1994) and gastroenterology (1999). Professor Spârchez followed various specialization in gastroenterology and ultrasound, focusing on interventional and contrast-enhanced ultrasound in various centers including University Hospital Perugia (Italy), Medical Clinic II, University of Frankfurt and Siloah Clinic, Hanover (Germany). In addition to clinical activities Prof. Spârchez was involved in research areas such as gastroenterology and ultrasound, with an emphasis on percutaneous diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, biliary interventions and applications of ultrasound contrast in different pathologies (liver, lung, and ultrasound guided interventions). He has a rich experience in liver biopsies and treatment of liver tumors by percutaneous ethanol injection and radiofrequency or microwave ablation. He has outstanding contributions in promoting the development of interventional ultrasound in Romania. Having a big experience with ethanol injection for hepatocellular carcinom he introduced for the first time in Romania radiofrequency (2002) and microwave ablation in the management of liver tumors. In the field of contrast enhanced ultrasound(CEUS) Prof.Sparchez has introduced the CEUS guidance in performing abdominal and thoracic percutaneous biopsy and the intracavitary applications of contrast agents in biliary and digestive tract pathology. He participated with papers (oral or poster) at over 125 national and international congresses. He was invited as speaker at numerous national and international scientific sessions. The scientific activity of Assoc. Prof. Spârchez includes publication of two books, 50 chapters in specialized books in Romania or abroad and 100 papers in scientific journals, including 51 ISI articles of which 20 as first author. He has more than 1100 citations . Due to its experience and scientific activity Prof.Sparchez was selected as part of european experts who prepared the Guidelines for thoracic (2001) and interventional ultrasound (2015). In recent years Prof. Spârchez was involved in 14 research projects as coordinator or member.
