Martina Smolić, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology, currently appointed as Vice Dean for Postgraduate Study Programs and Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek and as Head of Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek, University of Osijek, Croatia. She graduated from Medical School University of Zagreb, Medical Studies in Osijek with an M.D. Since 2004 she has been working in the field of pharmacology of liver diseases and diseases of mineral metabolism. Her PhD Thesis "Specific and Targeted Selection of Genetically Protected Hepatocytes Using Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis" was defended at the University of Osijek, Croatia (Mentor: Prof. Dragan Primorac, M.D., Ph.D.). She was employed as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT, US for five years working at two projects: "A new model of HCV infection of humanized liver in immunocompetent rats" and "Evaluation of potential agents for the treatment of hepatitis C" funded by the NIH (P.I. Prof. George Y. Wu) and as a Research Fellow at the Croatian MSES Science Program (P.I. Prof. Antun Tucak). In 2010 and 2011, she was the Principal Investigator of the "Development of Humanized Rat Hepatotoxicity Screening Model" project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT, US. In 2013, she was elected by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education to one among 20 the most outstanding Research Fellows in the Republic of Croatia. From 2014/2015., she is appointed as the Head of the Postgraduate Doctoral Study Program in Biomedicine and Health and Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek. Since 2017/2018., she is appointed as Vice Dean for Postgraduate Study Programs at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health in Osijek. She has extensive teaching experience in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate study programs, and her teaching skills have been graded as excellent by students’ evaluations. Under her mentorship 13 master theses and 3 PhD theses have been defended. She is a member of the Standing Committees at the University of Osijek, as well as the president and member of the Standing Committees at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek and the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek. She serves as a First Vice-President of the Croatian Society for Precision (Personalized) Medicine and a member of the Editorial board of the Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology and as a reviewer for several scientific journals. She has published numeorus papers in peer-reviewed journals, with a number of proceedings of the conferences, chapters in textbooks and other educational materials. She has delivered several keynote and invited lectures at international scientific conferences. She is organizer of the postgraduate course "Basic skills of educators in Biomedicine and Health and Interdisciplinary Fields of Science" and a member of Scientific Committees of International conferences (IMC-HCV, ISABS). She has received awards from German Research Foundation, Croatian Ministry of Science, International Society for Applied Biological Sciences, Croatian Science Foundation and was elected to „20 the best research fellows in Croatia“.
