Group I: esophagus with normal caliber but with slow contrast progression and small retention of barium contrast 1 min after ingestion; group II: esophagus with small to moderate dilatation and considerable radiological contrast retention; group III: hypotonic esophagus with important dilatation, poor motor activity and great retention of radiological contrast; and group IV: esophagus elongated over the diaphragm with great contrast retention.
