Trond Berg received his PhD at Rutgers University in NJ, USA in 1968. He has later worked at University of Oslo, Norway. Full professor since 1985. His main work has been focused on immunological functions of the liver. He has characterized hepatic receptors (Fc-, scavenger-, mannose-, and asialoglycoprotein-receptors) involved in innate and adaptive immunity and was a pioneer in clarifying the pathways involved in the endocytosis mediated by these receptors. He has published several papers on hepatic metabolism of lipoproteins and demonstrated how scavenger receptor B mediated transfer of cholesterol to hepatocytes. His group also reported how vitamin A in lipoproteins is taken up in hepatocytes and transferred to storage in stellate liver cells. His Group also demonstrated that the stellate cells secrete lysosomal enzymes and remove collagen by receptor-mediated endocytosis, processes that are crucial in liver fibrosis and metastases. His papers are referred to more than 7000 times. Trond Berg has been on the editorial Board of Biochemical Journal for 7 years, and has reviewed papers from numerous journals during the last 40 years. He has lectured in animal physiology and cell biology every year since 1968, and has been opponent at about 50 PhD exams (in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium). He received Fridtjof Nansen-price for outstanding Research in 2011.
