Paul was appointed as a Paediatric Gastroenterologist in the Edinburgh Sick Children’s Hospital in 2015 and is currently the lead for the Chronic Liver Disease service. Following his basic paediatric training in South-East Scotland he also trained in Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow and King’s College Liver Unit, London. During his training he completed his Ph.D thesis on paediatric inflammatory bowel disease, looking at aspects of epidemiology, genetic susceptibility, faecal biomarkers and molecular biology. He has authored over 60 publications in various subjects within paediatric gastroenterology and continues his research interests, having been appointed as an NHS Research Scotland Clinician in 2016. He is involved in several national and international research studies, has strong links with Napier University studying the effects of IBD medications on autophagy, and he also has research interests in the areas of nutrition and Hepatology. He has recently secured funding to establish Scotland-wide hepatology research focussing on epidemiology and natural history studies and is a member of the European guideline group for the management of Crohn’s disease and the UK guideline group for Autoimmune Hepatitis.
