A/Prof Jayasekara is a specialist in public health medicine and medically trained cancer epidemiologist with over 20 years’ experience. Having begun his career as a medical doctor in 1999, A/Prof Jayasekara pursued a career in public health medicine, completing his Masters’ (2002) and MD (2006) in Community Medicine. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Australian National Health and Medical Research Council PhD scholarship to establish research on lifetime alcohol intake and risk of cancer and mortality in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study at the University of Melbourne. His empirical research including highly cited systematic reviews led to Cancer Council Victoria’s 2015 Drink Less Live More campaign. A/Prof Jayasekara is internationally recognized in risk factor epidemiology and his research has had significant impact on cancer prevention policies and clinical practice guidelines. Currently, A/Prof Jayasekara is Principal Investigator of two large United States National Cancer Institute-sponsored international consortia on upper GI cancer: the United States National Cancer Institute Stomach Cancer Consortium and the United States National Cancer Institute Esophageal Cancer Consortium, funded by the Australian NHMRC and the World Cancer Research Fund, respectively.
