Full name: Naoki Asano, M.D., Ph.D. Currently I have two professional titles: Head, Division of Cancer Stem Cell, Miyagi Cancer Center Research Institute; Professor, Division of Carcinogenesis and Senescence Biology, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine. I first started my carrier as a scientist in investigating Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric intestinal metaplasia. I was curious why a differentiated organ like the stomach acquire the characteristics of other differentiated organ. I found out that this bacterium induced the expression of the homebox gene CDX2 in the gastric epithelial cells and that the innate immunity-related molecule NOD1 plays a pivotal role during this induction. And now, in this super-aging society, I am devoted to elucidating the mechanisms behind aging-related carcinogenesis. Since I am a Gastroenterologist, currently I am focusing on gastric cancers. To date, no other scientists are investigating these mechanisms using organoids. My colleagues and I have revealed the role that innate immunity-related molecule plays in Helicobacter pylori-infected stomach and in inflammatory bowel diseases. Recently, we have revealed a glimpse of aging-related gastric carcinogenesis. I have published 101 scientific papers including 10 first-author papers and 8 corresponding author papers. The journals include Gastroenterology, Gut, Journal of Clinical Investigations, Cancer Research, Mucosal Immunology, Journal of Immunology, and World Journal of Gastroenterology. I have presented our work at 46 international academic conferences. According to Web of Science, I have 2616 citations and my H-Index is 25. I am a member of American Gastroenterological Association, Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, Japan Society of Hepatology, Japanese Gastroenterological Association, Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Cancer Screening, Japanese Board of Cancer Therapy, and Japanese Cancer Association. I have peer reviewed more than 67 manuscripts (this number is from after I started keeping records) and I am an editorial board member of four academic journals. I have edited 8 manuscripts so far. Aging is a risk factor for cancers in many organs. My goal is to elucidate the mechanism behind aging-related carcinogenesis not only in the stomach but also in other organs as well so that we could age without worrying about suffering from cancers.
