Dr Beales is a consultant gastroenterologist at the Norfok and Norwich University Hospital and Senior Lecturer in Gastroenterology and Cell Biology at the Norwich Medical School, at University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. He trained in gastroenterology in London, Cambridge and Norwich in the United Kingdom and at University of Michigan in the USA. In addition to a broad-based gastrointestinal practice, he supervises both clinical and basic research teams and has a major role in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. Dr Beales's main clinical and clinical research interests are in acute and chronic gastrointestinal haemorrhage, NSAIDs and peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, C. difficile infection, gastrointestinal effects of systemic disease and the design and evaluation of novel therapeutic agents in gastroenterology and ways to enhance medical edcuation. In addition, Dr Beales supervises a basic resaech laboratory examining the pathophysiological roles of gastrointestinal peptidies and mechanisms of signal transduction in inflammatory and malignant gastointestinal diseases. Dr Beales has published widely in these areas including highly cited original papers examining the molecular mechanisms of somatostatin reguluation in H.pylori, the role of adipokines in Barrett's eosphagus and esophageal cancer and the anto-cancer effects of statins.
