Professor Viswanath is a Consultant Surgeon and Visiting Chair at Teesside University. He is a consultant senior surgeon with specialist interest in upper gastrointestinal and Advanced Laparoscopic & Endoscopic Surgery who works at James Cook University Hospital. He is the programme director for MCh postgraduate surgical specialities works in collaboration with Teesside University in North of England United Kingdom. He has represented regionally, nationally and internationally at various Upper gastrointestinal and general surgery forum since the year 2001. He is a recognised national trainer for advanced laparoscopic surgery and in the national ALSGBI council. He runs many live courses and established national ‘endo RF anti-reflux’ therapy centre in United Kingdom and carry out maximum number of these procedures per year in Europe. He has served as upper gastrointestinal lead and was instrumental in centralisation of Oesophago-gastric cancer services in Teesside and South Durham, United Kingdom. He has successfully accomplished his tenure as the Cancer Lead Clinician for a large cancer centre in North of England compiling tertiary and secondary cancer services based at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has headed ‘Governance team’ for the division of Surgery and carried various portfolio’s over the last 12 years with in the ‘Trust’ and at ‘Network’ level , including ‘Upper gastrointestinal site specific group’ chair and Network information group lead. From the cancer governance view, he has been involved in ‘National Cancer peer Review’ process in United Kingdom. He remains active in research and has presented more than 200 abstracts in national and international meetings and published both clinical and scientific papers. He holds a few national and international awards including ‘NRI of the year (professional) category 2017. Mr. Viswanath research interests mainly focussed in Upper Gastro-intestinal (Oesophago-Gastric) cancer including Barrett's metaplasia. He works in closed collaboration with North of England regional universities (University of Durham and University of Teesside). As a full time consultant surgeon, he remains active in both clinical, radiological and lab based research. His particular interests are on Cancer Immunology and molecular biology. He has supervised PhD, MSc MCh and MPhil students.
