In a scenario where mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are given to the subject, the cancer stem cell (CSC) can form gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) with the MSCs and/or can suppress the immune system through mechanism such as expansion of regulatory T-cells (Tregs). GJIC can facilitate the exchange of small microRNA between the cancer stem cell and MSCs.
