Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) on tumor cells interact with PD-1 on T-cells, leading to inhibition of T-cell receptor signaling pathway, downregulating T-cell responses. Blocking the PD-1/PD-L1 interaction with anti-PD-1 antibodies allows T cells targeted to the tumor to effectively eliminate cancer cells.
