Figure 1 Scheme of the mechanism for encapsulated islets. Immune iso-lation can be achieved by covering islets with semi-permeable membranes consisting of high polymer. Semi-permeable membranes protect the inner islets from both mechanical stress and the recipient's immune system (both cellular and humoral immunities), while allowing bidirectional diffusion of glucose, oxygen, nutrients, insulin and waste.
