Figure 1 Putative mechanisms by which the human immunodeficiency virus virion increases the risk of atherosclerosis. The virus induces expression of adhesion molecules for leukocytes, reduce the secretion of nitric oxide with reduced vasodilation and induce endothelial cells apoptosis.
