The liver is made up of 8 segments: Segment 1 is the caudate lobe and is closely related in position to the inferior vena cava posteriorly; Segments 1-4 make up the left hemi-liver; Segments 5-8 make up the right hemi-liver. Couinaud divided the liver into functional left and right hemi-livers, and the plane between the two runs in Cantlie’s line. This line runs from the middle of the gallbladder fossa anteriorly to the IVC posteriorly.
