Concurrent ACTH infusion to evaluate intermediate metabolites of adrenal steroid biosynthesis.Acute insulin elevation resulted in an increased response of 17 alpha hydroxysteroid intermediates.Increased 17-OHP/androstenedione and 17-OH pregnanolone/DHEA molar ratio suggest relative inhibition of 17-20 lyase activity by insulin.Acute hyperinsulinemia in a range found in insulin-resistant individuals enhances adrenal response to ACTH stimulation.
