Lipid peroxidation and cytochrome P450 2S1 (CYP2S1) can activate benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) to the potent mutagen, benzo[a]pyrene-r-7,t-8-dihydrodiol-t-9,10-epoxide (BaP-diol-t-epoxide).
