Mucus thickness and accumulation rate (means ± SE) in male (M) (n = 8) and female (F) (n = 11) animals. Time in minutes is given on the X-axis. 1st removal marks the mucus thickness of the firmly adherent mucus layer after removal of the loosely adherent mucus layer at the start of the experiment. Subsequent time periods show the accumulation rate of the loosely adherent mucus layer which is again removed at the second removal.
